I have my 60 Edsel in the shop now. I'm gonna buy some wheels and tires for it, but I'm not sure which way to go. It will either get Astro Supremes and skinny whitewalls, or chrome reverse w/ spider caps and wide whites. What do you think it needs???
The car will be repainted the stock color with a pearl white roof and lowered 4-5 inches. The interior is going to get a pearl white tuck & roll w/ black piping. It's just going to be a clean mild custom, nothing crazy. Let me know what you think.

I don't like Astros with blackwalls or Astros with wide whites. I'm leaning towards the Astros with the skinny whitewalls. I think it will give the car some at***ude.

that car is pretty damn cool. I have one car with chrome smoothies and skinny whites, one car with supremes and skinny whites, they are both cool. but In my opinion chrome reverse with skinny whites and spiders would be killer. Its your car you pick

My '64 is going to get Astros and skinny whitewalls. Nice thing about them is if you change your mind down the road, seems like everyone is in the market for a used set of Astros and you'll damn near get all your money back. Plus they have the look.

Chrome steel wheels would look nice too, but I think '60 is pushing it for WWW's. I love that Edsel, can't wait to see it done.

  16. Something more pedestrian, say a '60 Imperial, I'd go with Chromies, but the Edsel Needs Astros.

The spokes of the astros mimic the front parking light trim

You're going through the same thing I just went through for the 59 Elky.

I decided steelies with spiders and skinny whites. I even bought it all. Got a great deal on some 14 steelies. Good, old HEAVY ones with nice thick chrome. Speedway spiders. Was trying to decide on the tires and my brain couldn't get happy with it all.

Then MarkX posted a set of Astros for sale. Brand new older ones. Made in the USA, with bullet caps and bullet lugs. Now I have bothe sets.

I'm going with the Astros and Firestone FR380 skinny whites. Yes, they're radials but they don't have all the radial marking **** on them.

Oh yeah, I say steelies, spiders and skinnies on the Edsel. That thing has a lot of chrome and the Supremes might get it over the top.

I would fog the center of the steelies so the spiders show a little better.

If you go WWW's on chrome reversed wheels they can't be "smoothies" They need to be actually reversed wheels with the "cone" shape of the pre disc brake inner wheel on the outside.
Ford's usually did them by reversing the best looking Buick rims on Ford centers (same size centers, so it works) Some went as far as to leave the valve stems on the inside for the ultimate clean look. "Appliance Chrome" was the major player in wheel supply in the early 60's.
Smoothies don't come in reversed, just "deep set" and arent the same.
Top line Customs were running Skinny whites as early as '58 and by the time Astros came out, if you wanted WWW's you had to special order them because NO ONE except Packard restorers and Harlem pimps (actual pimps, not "rappers") wanted them!

    My Choice order.
    #1 Astros, Skinny whitewalls
#2 "Appliance Chrome" reversed Buick rims on Ford centers, chromed, with Skinny or if you must, Wide Whites.
#3 American five spoke "mags" with WWW's, Blackwalls or skinny Whites
#4 Painted wheels with Beauty rims and drawer pull and paint customized '57 Plymouth "cone" wheel discs* or something like '61 Thunderbird or Corvette wheel discs with WWW's. (If ya gotta retro-style with WWW's) WWW's were going away fast, at the same time "custom" wheels replaced hubcaps.

I guess I just don't like any car that looks like it was Customized some time after '57 with WWW's.

*full hubcaps are/were called wheel discs so you don't think I'm talking about just "dog dish" small hubcaps.)

MY CHOICE ???? EARLY CONED RE~VERSE WHEELS & SKINNY WHITE WALLS .... SPIDERS ARE YOUR CHOICE..... I THINK IT WOULD LOOK GOOD EITHER OR..

BUT !!!!! FOR THAT SAKE OF AN EARLY '60s MILD CUSTOM....

NO WIDE WHITES ON ALL CHROME WHEELS... YOU LOOSE THE WHEEL IN A SEA OF WHITE !!!

NO BLACK WALLS UNLESS YOU GONNA DUMP THE FRONT, LEAVE THE BACK HIGH, RUN BIGGER TIRES IN BACK & HAVE CHROME REVERSE WHEELS........

IF YA REALLY WANNA KNOW HOW IT WAS DONE ...... PICK UP SOME CUSTOM BOOKS FROM '59~'62.... THEY WILL SHOW YA !!

Damn-that looks great! I'd go silver big flake over black on the roof, shave the handles and badges, but keep the side trim-it looks to be in good shape. I wonder how smaller, round taillights would look on that? Switch the grille insert with circular expanded metal.
As far as wheels, check Allied, Pacer and U.S. Wheels. They're making the closest wheels to them. Discount Tire can order the U.S.-around 700 with skinny white tires out the door.

Looks like the same color as my car, I've been thinking of a similar paint scheme, I have the creme white roof too want to have another shade of turquoise separated by trim. I first was going to vote for chrome wheels but the comment on the spokes matching some of the features of you car are very true.
