That's the way my Dad was. He fixed things just because other people said they couldn't be fixed.

Fix it or sell cheap. Some people have the ability to fix what seems unsavable to the next guy. When it comes to the old stuff, I will always give stuff away or sell on the cheap to people I know will use it for a good purpose.

When I was a younger man, I fixed a lot of things just to learn how (or how not) to fix stuff.
Then I moved on to fixing some things because I wanted to try it.
Then I moved on to fixing most things because they needed to be fixed.
Then I moved on to fix some stuff just because some people said it couldn't be done.
Then I reached a point where I didn't have to prove my abilities to fix anything to anyone.
That's when I started putting a value on my time, and went with the value of the repair process.
Then I just got old and only fixed what needed to be fixed.
These days I will be more then happy to instruct you on how I would fix something.

    Hello,

When we had cookouts at the beach, we started with a galvanized old wash tub. It was old, crusty, but round and easily able to convert to a barbecue grill. All we needed was a metal set of bars across the top of the wash tub and we were set for the red hot grill and the steaks/hot dogs. I can still smell the cooking aroma around the fire pit.

If I had an old backyard like some folks here on the HAMB, the hood would make a great grill as it is big enough to create a bigger barbecue cooktop. The whole idea is to have a metal bottom area to place the barbecue chips, briquettes and get the fire started… a large metal grill from commercial places or any metal bar set up would work.

The original concept was to bring several 6 foot long solid metal bars to the fire pits and lay them out over the fire. Soon the solid metal bars got hot enough to serve several families with kids. We were all sitting around the fire pit and getting things ready.

But, when we were at a location that did not have certified fire pits with grills or not, a catch all metal container was necessary for easy cooking and cleanup, without polluting the sand or dirt.

So, with that in mind, the hood in question is not fixable to fit perfectly in straight lines with rolled bottom edges. The hood is the first thing folks notice and if the lines are not straight, questions and mentions of the quality of work always comes up. So, a new hood, a reproduction one or any newish hood from hot rod sources is better than spending more time to get the edges rounded and straight.

Find a grill with legs to insert on top ot a pile of briquettes, on the inside of the hood space. The metal hood will contain the briquettes and ash in the smaller nose area.

Or, if the grill is larger than the hood, place on top of the edges of the upside down hood.

Now, we can all smell that aroma of an outdoor barbeque area and what’s cooking on top… YRMV

Amen. There’s always someone who would love to have the s****s another guy deems “too rough”. Just need to find a way to help the two guys meet.
