I have my 32 chevy truck body all squared up and have a question before I commit. Do you guys that have replaced the wood with box tubing using a rosette (plug) weld to attach the frame to the body. or another type of weld? also I plan to chop the top. So do I build the sturcture fully inside the cab and cut through it when I chop it or intall the structure after the top is cut down. Im really lost here guys and want to get it right....
I think I'd true things up with some temporary tubes, chop it and then install full length tubes one at a time after you get the top tacked back together. Ask your upholsterer what he wants for tack strips and install them for him.
thanks thats a god idea. Now how is the final structure installed. Is it plug welds. Im still confused on that one
I use a combination of both. Some spots need the edges welded, so you don't do any welding to the outer (visible) panels. But inside door jams, trunk edges, etc, the rosette welds are better/stronger. Look up Edmurder's posts on his 31 Chevy to see how we did it on his car. On his car we are bracing the body first, just up to the beltline. Then we'll brace up the openings, be sure to triangulate the braces, then remove the top to chop it. I'll probably cut & weld the top's tubes so they will slip into the lower body tubing, then weld them in. Should put in a rosette weld or 2 into where the tubing is slipped inside the lowers, for extra strength.
