Kicking ideas around for the next book project, I've decided to see if there's any interest in this: If you have plans to bring your car to the U.S. for any driving events, I'd like to cover the story. From the first planning stages, through the entire build, figuring out the logistics of transporting the car, trash talk with fellow competitors leading up to the event, full coverage of the event itself and your adventures around it, the return trip home and the aftermath. Ideally, we'd have people from around the world coming here to compete in drags, lakes racing, open road challenges, drifting, hill climbs, dirt track ovals, etc. Bonus points for participating in secret illegal races (hey, it has to be interesting reading, right?)... I'll be busy writing through next fall, so won't be available to cover many 2011 events (although I will consider some), but if you're shooting for an event in 2012, that would be perfect. This is one of those hairbrained ideas that has to be thrown out there to see if there's any takers, just so I can say I tried. If you're interested, you can PM me here or just post on this thread. Who knows what this speck of an idea might evolve into... Thanks, Scotty AKA Jangleguy
Hmmm... Maybe this wasn't much of an idea. Well, if you're from out of the U.S., please mention this to your pals in the overseas social groups, since I can't post there, okay? Thanks, Scotty
Scotty, I know several that plans to go to the US for both vintage dragracing, landspeed (two teams in Norway). The Swedish guys go over there all the time. I`ll pass the word ....................................... Taildragger&fenderless
Fenderless - Thank you so much! That's the HAMB spirit at work... I've also been contacted by friends of the Trashers bellytank in The Netherlands. Cool!
Don't know if Vintage Road Racing is in the mix or not, but there are a lot of cars and drivers that come over for these events every year.
Thanks Simon. Yeah, I've even hosted some people who came over here (you guys should've been there when Simon learned to drive 'on the wrong side of the road' in my pickup - ha! What a day that was)... So yeah, if you have friends planning to come here for a driving event - with their own car or one they buy (or even rent) here - have 'em contact me about it, okay? Thanks again Simon, Scotty
Give it some time. We are on a different time zone to you so everyone is still at work for at least another couple hours. Sounds like a great crazy idea. Plenty of Kiwi guys head over there every year for events.
Thanks for the reminder, Lifestylz. Just trying to stay on top of this today, while I can - I get slammed working and before I know it, the nurse is bringing my medication and it's lights-out...
Time here now is 4.22pm. They will all be thinking of heading to the Pub for a beer before going home. Middle of summer here and hot as hell.
Oh you just had to bring that day up didn't you Lucky I was not in that morris of yours. When are you going to come and try driving here About the only person I know that may take a car to the US again is Rod Hadfield. Also Bonneville have you considered ??? as a few take Salt cars over now. Scotty depending on the US to NZ / AU time zones you need to think we are about 15 hours ahead of you ok. My first post on this was this morning and it is now only late afternoon here.
Scotty, there is an Italian streamliner being built with US Indycar parts coming to Speedweek this year. Here is the thread on Landracing.com http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,9119.0.html
Also look at Dr Goggles Bellytank thread here and on landracing.com. They came from down under last year for Speedweek. And several Canadians, PM Cword about their North of the 49 team. You just want me to write the damn book for you?
Hey Scotty, well...I'm not bringing my rod over to the US (I usually buy it there and ship it over to Switzerland!) but I will be at Speedweek again with "our" #8892 car. This year (well, last year) I bought a model A 5 Window and my buddies in CT are changing engine, tranny and suspension for me. I'm going over in spring to help them. So I'm having my own rod this August for the trip from CT to Bonneville and back. It's not exactly what you're looking for but eventually worth one or two sentences in your book. Of course I thought about bringing my rod over and drive on the Salt with a Swiss licence plate, but ît's just too much money "just" to ship that thing over and back.... Anyways - when this book is finished, I'll buy a copy just to see other crazy guys and gals Peter
T-bolt: Thanks so much! And that'd be great if you'd write the book - while I catch up on my sleep... I'm slammed right now with other projects, but I find this too exciting to resist (typical for me).
Agreed. In the last few years, there have been a few Kiwi's at Bonneville. Here is the thread for Speedweek 2010 on the NZ Hot Rod forum which has some others apart from Bill Ward ... http://www.nz-hotrod.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=5648 If you posted something in the forum there you would probably get a good response on who is planning to go back. http://www.nz-hotrod.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=24
Still thinking about bringing the Hudson over. Now it will be 2012 as we have had one trip in 2009(Route 66),another in August 2010(Bonneville) and again in December 2010(Sons post wedding party) Would like to do some runs and especially go to a couple of Hudson Museums(Ypsilanti and Shipshewana).Need to do the logistics on this.
