i uesd to skate about a year ago. if you want a good boared get it slick on the bottom. its a little heavyer, buts its worth it. because whnen you boared slide, front slide, or back slide you dont have to wax the crude as much, and then the design on it dosent get messed up. also watch for rocks, because when you hit them with the wheels you fly forward and samething when you go up most driveways.

If he can stay on in one of the shallow bowls they have at the park, I will claim success. Everything after that is going to have to be up to him. Maybe he will do some rail grinding next month. [IMG]

You mean I gotta box that thing up and huck it to CANADA??

Customs will have a fit...they'll think I'm trying to smuggle the 70s into your country one artifact at a time! Maybe I can get Leif Garrett to ride it up to you incognito...shouldn't draw too much attention! [IMG]

    You got it...ha ha...tag, you're IT!!!

(But I stipulate that photos of you gettin' rad on that thing must be posted HERE! [IMG])

As always...carefull what you wish for! [IMG]

Believe me...I thought about a weed whipper mill for that funkadellic pink-n-purple thing! But it bit me a few times WITHOUT an engine...didn't wanna make it any MORE ferocious!

I'm with you there. I've got a Powell longboard. The one with the Hula Girl on the bottom. I put some red deck tape on it, but cut it in strips so it looks like it's got "D" panels and stringer. [IMG]

I've got to get me some bigger trucks and wheels and ride it some more.

    Here's me CARVIN'!!! [IMG]

From my own personal experience, don't give the kid a slick to start with. I started with one, and yes, they're nice for boardslides, but when I decided to buy a wood deck a few years later, I gained a lot of confidence with tricks because it was much easier to manipulate. They're waaaay lighter for a beginner. And waxing your board is half the fun anyway. [IMG]

Support your kid's interests, skateboarding and BMX are two things that you learn on your own time, at your own pace. You don't have someone yelling at you telling you your'e not good enough or not doing what you need to do. A kid can make lots of friends, and even earn a living doing these things, but most of all, it's fun.

Hey Badpat! I dug out that Vintage Groovin Board and boxed it up for ya this afternoon! It's a bit more haggard than I remembered it looking...but there's still enough pink and purple showing so that you will look plenty gay! [IMG]

It served as a damn fine trans mover arounder for years...but it's all yours now!

(Don't worry...it still rolls sweet and true...ain't lost a thang!)

It's a Caliente 500, if that means anything to ya??

Ha Ha Ha...I haven't set foot on that thing since Andre Cymone was on the radio! [IMG]

I'll get it shipped out to ya this week...you will be in full Nick Lowe mode before long!

    (Pinker and Prouder Than Previous!)

No idea on shipping yet...I can haul it down there for a quote, but it shouldn't be much...since you gave me a U.S. addy! [IMG]

Don't let the BIG PACKAGE fool you...it won't be too big to handle when you whip it out! [IMG]

Sorry to chime in a little late here, but I think that skating with your kids is great! I have two boys ages 3 & 4 and they both skate with me every night. I don't think you should tighten the wheels up on their boards, but that's just my 2¢. I let em' go for what ever they think is comfy for them to do. My oldest (who is 4 years old) has been skating for about a year now and can olie up curbs, do backside rail slides (he can't do frontside for some odd reason) and goes off launch ramps. he is also pretty good on mini ramps and 1/4 pipes. People trip that he is that young and can do alll that stuff. Let the little kids go for it. They are building all their motor skills and coordination now, so just imagine the kind of controll they will have over their movements when they get older if you let them grow up with a skateboard under their feet! The way I look at it is they are are boys and will get hurt no matter what. You can't coddle them all the time. Let them jump in with both feet, they might suprise you!

I don't think anyone mentioned a "Blank" board. They sell for around $30.00, cheaper than a regular deck, so if the little grom gives up you're not out as much $$! My friends and I were just watching Streets on Fire starring car builder extrodainaire Jason Jessee. Also one of my all time favorite vert riders. The video was just reissued and I definitely recommend buying it. Most core skate shops would have it or you can order it from skateboard.com, another useful website. You're never too old to start skating, I'm 31 and still at, though I am the only one wearing full knee pads at the parks, a lesson I wish I learned sooner than later... enjoy!

Yeah, I'm 37 and beyond caring what 15 year-olds think about me. I am going to have some fun with the boy. I will have all of the safety gear on and so will he and you are right, never too late to live life. Maybe I won't be able to do all of those tricks, but that is okay as long as we are having fun.

  16. I've been skating for about 18 years now and I've been working for a skateboard shoe company for 9 years now: etnies, eS and Emerica skate shoes and there are close to 100 parks here in Southern California now and kids now a days are trying to be the best and skate with the worse attitude. Make sure your kid just has fun with it, weather he sticks with it or not. Once a skateboarder always a skateboarder. Go to these websites for local skateparks in your area. www.skateparks.com www.concretedeciples.com And as far as decks go, don't get him the slick bottom boards, at his age he's not going to be able to boardslide at 100 miles an hour, if the pros don't ride them slick bottom decks neither should your kid, there's a reason for that.

I am new to San Diego and I need a new deck. I would rather support someone that I know of than some run of the mill skate shop. If you could give me some info on how to get a hold of you or the company that would be kick ass and then I wouldnt have to keep ridin my waterlogged deck I have now.
    Thanks

My son has been skating since he was 5 or 6. (Hes 11 now) he started off on cheap, slow boards and now rides the better ones. The advice of starting out slow is warranted. My son also likes "mini" boards. hes gone through lots of them because he likes to grind. I think we paid around 80-90 bucks for his first complete borad. Then gradually started replacing components like wheels and trucks and bearings as he developed a taste for brands he felt were good. He also likes a board with alot of "pop" for ollies and kick flips. heres what you have to look forward to. After a while it doesn't scare you to watch... LOL

That's so cool Ted, I'm glad you're getting yer whippersnapper to do some physical stuff. Americans are such fat bloated do nuthins. My daughter's getting chubby, I gotta get her doing something.
I haven't skated in years, I don't even know where my board is anymore. I wasn't any good I just enjoyed the feeling of danger and the possibilty of breaking a bone or two.
One of my favorite skateboarding activities was downhill slaloms laying flat on the board in parking lots late at night. I look back on that shit and wonder why some of us didn't crack our craniums.

    I second getting safety equipment.

Nads ( and any other old timers looking to get back in) A great ay to start again is a long board. I've got a Chock Barfoot (think he's a surfboard shaper) It's about 4' and really flexi. You just carve all over the place. They're about $180, but he puts them on ebay once in a while, that's where I got mine for $90.

  29. This is cool. I have skated on and off for over 20 years, that feels wierd to say! I just had my 3 yr old daughter skating down the hall last night. She charged it. I was really impressed. I think it is great to get itnto sumthin like this with your kids. I still take a skateboard with me everywhere. The one dude was right, once you are into it theres a ood chance youll always be. I still go to the new park here, its a blast. I don't do all the new style flippy stuff, It is just fun to ride fast and do grinds! I'm gonna let my girl go at it as crazy as she feels fit. Kids are pretty feerless. Pretty cool, more powre to ya caballo! I can't wait to take my girl surfin! Thats next on the agenda. Larry
