Alright, I know at first this may not seem 'car related' BUT, what are our cars without US?? In reading a thread by Tugmaster about his bout with 'Squamus Cell skin cancer' I figured I would put this out here as a 'HeadsUp'. PROSTATE CANCER. It's a possibility for all of us three-legged car fabbers so listen up. My stepDad p***ed away Dec.23 2003 from it. How it got him is why you need to read this: He had had a pain in his leg/thigh for a bit, no big deal, he just chalked it up to age, etc. Well, as time went on (weeks) it got worse. When it got to the point that he could hardly stand (much less walk) on that leg my Mom finally got him to see a Doc. 2 Weeks Later He Was Gone. Remember, with Prostate Cancer, the symptom isnt always minute *******, achy lower back or a swelling above the knards. Had we heard that a small muscle in your gut can cause sever LEG pain when it goes south, he would still be here today. Joe Bailey Springfield met my Mom late in life and was only in mine for 7yrs and yet he made just as big an impact as my own Dad. Remember, for those of us 'gettin up' in years.... DONT IGNORE THE ODD ****E! (I know I would hate like hell to be looking down watching some dufus do ****e to my car that made it look like ****) Here is a site we should ALL look at. EVEN if you are feeling fine, ALL MEN should get your "stuff" checked on a regular bases just like us ladies do. DON'T wait till there's something amiss, get checked as often as your doctor says is necessary for your age and PREVENT CANCER.
This is really not a O/T subject, because, if you get it, the big "C", it will definately have an effect on how you go about this hobby of building, repairing, driving. You money will be going to Co-pay instead of buying parts, or spending to attend functions. You will be going to get your Chemo or Radiation treatments instead of bending over or crawling under your pride and joy. You're liable to be too tired to accomplish what you set out to do that morning. And this does not even begin to touch on how it will affect your families. There's been several other H.A.M.B'ers here who have chimed in with their own personal stories of their bouts with the various kinds of the big "C". Please take heed. As Denise mentioned, if the guys would take care of them selves as the women do, about having regular check ups, many, many types can be controlled, especially in the early stages. Having a "light on a stick" going up the tail pipe is not the most pleasant thing I can think of, but it can most definately be a life saver. Most of the other screening is not quite that bad. But, again, please take it from me, the "HellRaiser", and do get screened. Trust me on this one, it would be much more of a badge to wear a little ****on that says "I'm cancer free", instead of one that says "I'm a Survivor". So..to all of you others who have the big "C" as I do, who have already survived their bout, (Hot Damn), we bid you take care of yourselves. We would like to keep you here on the H.A.M.B. for a long, long time. I might add, to this O/T, you don't have to be an "Old Coot" either, even though I am. HellRaiser
Hear Hear, HellRaiser! I put the O/T cuz this is important to all of us, but at the same time I didn't wanna step on any HAMB website toes kinda thing. Just showin' respect to the site. I'll be 40 shortly, but I still got checked out when I turned 38. So far so good. Now if I can just give up these smokes...lol
Thanks for the Thread. Two weeks ago a lot of my friends, Hot rod buds included, earned $3000.00 towards Cancer research. Our small community raised a total of near $30,000.00. I for one appreciate anything that brings attention to CANCER research. I live with it every day. Lost my dad and little brother, and two close hot rod buddies. Outstanding job, FarmBoy! A buddy of mine's MC was raising money for research. They garnered about $2200. He seemed abit down about it saying "..it's just a drop in a bucket." true true..maybe it's just me, but it seems like you gotta practically drag most guys to the doc for a regular check up. They make a difference though..

Mine was found due to my doctor being an ornery old coot. I had been calling in my allergy perscription renewals. One time I called, and the nurse said the doc wasn't going to refill until I came in for my overdue check-up. I did, and my PSA was high. Referred to a urologist, and he did a biopsy. Came back positive, but only in one quadrant and with a good Gleason Score. The urologist referred me to another urologist, and she is outstanding. She implanted 97 radioactive seeds into my prostate. I didn't even spend the night in the hospital. I spent the next two weeks needing to piss like a race horse, but only able to dribble a little at a time. Painful. After that, I never looked back. All plumbing still works as designed without needing any of the generous email offers I receive every day. I was 55 at the time. That was eight years ago. I immediately started begging my brother, who was 52 at that time, to get tested. He didn't, and when he hit 59, symptoms finally sent him to the doc. Yep...Prostate Cancer. He took external beam radiation, and got good results, although he was knocked on his *** for about six months. Prostate cancer is the best one to get if it is caught early. It is 100% fatal (unless something else gets you first) if it isn't caught in time. Get PSA tested after 50. If family history of Prostate cancer, get tested after 40.
this thread is relevant to all elements of your life including hot rodding. i am one of the lucky ones that get to call ourselves "survivors". trust me! the colonoscopy is much easier to live through than the weeks and weeks of radiation treatments and/or chemotherapy that you might have to live through if you are one of the "survivors". on the other hand , you might never have a need for a checkup, and you might never break down in your hot rod, and you might hit the lotto,...........................you get the picture. dan p.s. denise is right. they have doctors for everybody.
On kind of the same note all men in their 50's needs a colen test. It also kills lots of hard headed old coots. I recently had mine tested because my doc is old like me and said he wouldn't renew my pain medicine unless I had it done. I've been on pain medication for 25 years so I had it checked. Found 2 spots that were pre-cancerous. Had I not had it done I would have had a problem. When they put me under It was the best rest I've had in 30 years. I told them I wanted some more of that sleeping medicine in a mason jar. Guys need to quit worrying about someone seeing their hairy old **** and get checked. it will save your life. I think this is a very on topic for old hot rodders. GET CHECKED! I still have questions to ask some of you. TP

You don't have to be old to get cancer. I was diagnosed at age 24 with lymphoma, 3 months into my marriage. I'm an 18 year survivor this month. Don't ignore a pain that won't go away, regardless of your age. My FIL is currently on ho****e care. He is dying from his second bout with prostate cancer. Slonaker
i got woke up .and i guess lucky because i had a doctor that told me my prostate seemed to be the size of a 30 year old (i was 61 at the time ) , but he also said that my psa had risen some over the year before the exam. after a biopsy i had 5 of eight biopsies show positive now after 8 weeks of rad treatments and 3 shots my psa is less than .01 ,so like everyone says get a check up ,bless you all
I can't get over all the positive input everyone's had on here. When I put out this thread I just intended to write about something close to me and hopefully spread some useful information. Thank you all for your stories, encouragement and of course, your courage. Jef
