Rocky, I sent you an e-mail askin ya some pontiac questions, but just in case my e-mail is messed up, I thought I should ask ya here....may help someone else too. As you may remember, I have had a little trouble finding a replacement transmission for my '56 pontiac....it is a 3-spd car, and it had the original 3-spd in it, which didnt like my too-quick shift into second gear one night... I have found a '57 3-spd for a price I find relatively cheap, I need to know, before spending the cash, will it be a replacement, or is there some kinda mod I gotta do first? thanks... hillbilly
Bolt-in and break again..........you'll eventually grow weary of trying to find these fragile antique ******s and step up to a REAL transmission. I did. This is what worked for me. Score a 58-60 pontiac bellhousing. Score a 58 and newer G.M. manual transmission of 3,4 or even 5 speed configuration. Cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and pick out a driveshaft that spans the space and drive the car......you won't believe it's the same car. No more slipping the clutch away from stop lights........no more 2 minute-long shifts between gears with plenty of grinding..no more! NO more 2nd gear blow-ups. No more whiiiiiiine in 1st and 2nd gears. Best modification I ever made was to step up to the later ****** but, yes, the 57 ****** will work intil you get your later bellhousing bought.
