Technical ***August 2024 Banger Meet Thread - Hot/cold August Nights***

  1. Thanks guys! I know FSI makes a great product, I just honestly think points are simple and easy to carry spares of.

    Did some further digging and found some chatter on those old Mallory 011-series distributors. Is there any real advantage to those vs. the typical B centrifugal advance distributor, or should I just look for the nicest example I can find of either? Might be splitting hairs/overthinking here, too...

    I’m hoping I can meet up with Seth Hammond, he’s local and has a DOHC on a B block.

  4. Now that the new motor is in and the car actually moves, can someone point me to a good reference for fine tuning the carbs and timing? It is a Brierley winfield grind cam (IR), burns dual intake with 81's, stock distributor, simmons Power head, w16Y plugs, stock B fuel pump. Starts up fine but tends to fall flat when you punch it. pops a bi when you let off the gas, but it is open header right now. Always smells of gas when you park it. I have only run it a couple of miles. Plugs are dark brown but not fouled or wet when I pull them. Looking to learn. I have heard of tuning with a vacuum guage or adding an O2 sensor?

    I modified one of these and it works pretty good Mallory Type YS 701 AVC, think original application was for fork truck. Trick is there getting harder to find.

    Ouch that’s expensive
    I bought a handful some years ago and had pretty good results with them
    As you mentioned the spring setup needs attention for a model A application
    It has a pretty good advance range just by making adjustments without cutting or hacking on the mechanism
    IMHO better to start with a new assembly than worn out one

  8. I did about ten minutes of DuckDuckGo-ing on how to fiddle with the curve on these things and it doesn't look to ornery. Snagged that one. Thanks Dan! You are a lifesaver.

    With the OHV setup I am sure it would need the curve tweaked anyway compared to the standard high-compression flathead setup.

    We just kept trying springs for sbc Distibutor till we found some that worked. Somebody with a distributor machine could make quick work of it.

  10. With this being my first week back to work after recovering from a broken arm and wrist, I decided to celebrate with a little wrench turning. Still babying my wrist, but it felt good to get out and work a little.

    Should be firing this up in the next few days, now stopping? That’s a whole other story…

    Running a Brierley head, Brierley cam, FSI dist, 14yc plugs and 3 97’s. O2 sensors are priceless when tuning. Sync carbs then fine tune idle mixture screws. I got mine to idle at 13.5:1. It’s crisp and doesn’t bog or stumble when I punch it, it just takes off!

    I would ditch the stock distributor and get a FSI or equivalent. Convert to 12volt. I also run a MSD box which made a world of difference.

  14. How do O2 sensors work on HAMB-friendly cars? Is it like an OBD connection and you hide the wiring somewhere? I have some interest in that to help with tuning.

    A little more HP than stock. A block, counterbalanced crank, insert bearings.

    A 'little more than stock' seems a little understated if it's being fed by 3 97's :D
