The week started off with a single run to qualify and a backup run to set the record in V4F/GMR, simple, right?

Then we became greedy and reentered as a FMR fuel, you know nitro and all that stuff

Oh well, we will go looking for the lost #2 cylinder later this weekend.

Not sure if this is ok to add in here. I am trying to buy a Rocket 428 speed head for a banger build. The guy hasn't been making the heads but says if he gets 20 people he will take a $400 deposit to start a batch of heads. Would take about 4 months. $850 per head. Is anyone in here interested in one? I just got on the list as #12. I would say we need about 10-12 more people incase someone backs out. If you are interested, Please go to his website and email him to get on the list.

Charlie Yapp has been building those heads for a long time. We are running both a Lion head and a Rocket head here. Have you checked with Jim Brierley to see if he is casting or has any new heads?

Made a new hub nut for a Houk #4 wire wheel set last weekend. The original special hub nut is cast aluminum, and houses a hub mounted Veeder odometer unit, factory accessory for a Detroit Electric automobile. A little time on the lathe, and some twisting and turning in the new mill, just about DUN!

Thanks! The next project will also be wheel related… but much bigger! We’ll see how it goes…

Steel brake line works pretty well for hard fuel lines.

I use Nicop for fuel lines and cooler lines. It looks good and won't crack with vibration.

    Need some help here.
Late in 2023, I acquired a Jim Brierly 7:1 head and a Yapp Equalizer dual intake. They were installed and ran well all through 2024 and into early 2025. A while back the car started to run poorly and idle at 2000. Earlier this summer in talking to Jim Brierly, he mentioned that I should be running the 18 degree FSI and not the 28 degree which was in engine. I installed an 18, but perhaps too late. This past weekend on a hot rod tour, the engine suddenly overheated and stopped. I could not restart it. Today I tore the engine down and this is what I found.

The BEST gasket was burnt out between 3&4 and starting to destruct between 1&2
    engine2.jpg

Cylinder 3 was clean (left to right 4,3,2,1)
    engine1.jpg

Combustion chamber 3 was clean (left to right 4,3,2,1)
    engine4.jpg

The plugs looked a little carboned but the gap was correct. (left to right 1,2,3,4)
    engine3.jpg

The engine was built by Bert’s some years ago, but only came to life in the past four years. It only has about 1200 miles on it. The new head was torque to 65lbs and the surfaces appear to be flat. I’m not really smart on engines and was wondering if anyone had insight.

Hate it when the fun comes to a sudden stop...
I can't tell for sure, but the mating/coverage of the fire ring on the gasket to the head looks suspect. Do you have a new head gasket to lay on the head to look at that way? Does Brierley say to use an A or a B head gasket with his head? If there is any fire ring not covered by the head, that is suspect in my mind.

65 ft lbs is more than I go, you don't want to draw the threads out of the block. I don't know what you have for head studs. Chrome/moly at a minimum
I always torque to 55 ft lbs and start the engine without any coolant in it and let it idle until the head gets too hot to touch.
    Then I re-torque it hot to 55
let it cool and re-check it to 55
fill the cooling system with water, then drive it and drain and re-torque when it is cold
Fill it with coolant and worry about other stuff

That is a Best 573 gasket for a model B. The Best 509 is the 28-31 gasket but Snyder's say to use the 573 on Hi-Comp heads. I just ordered a new gasket set from Olson's and I don't know which copper head gasket it contains. It was Jim Brierly who advised me to go to 65lbs.
What is the difference between the A and the B gasket? Should I use the 509 A gasket if it comes?
I am using ARP studs, washers and nuts. I like your sequence and will use it when putting the head back on. I think with this sequence I will also only go to 55lbs. There will be updaates.
    Thanks Larry

I think Jim mentioned last Saturday he had 2 heads left and was going to possibly get more castings (which have jumped in price - again). Don't forget Jim's heads are a little taller for better cooling so you'll need to use different studs. Jim uses ARP and generally sells them with the head (if he has them).
