  4. Any word? I know how you feel. In 2005 my model A pickup was stolen and never recovered. Was in my family since it was bought new in '30. Hoping you recover your Austin intact. rockysabone.jpg

Having had my shop broken into and all of my tools and equipment stolen, I know what you are feeling.
It put me out of business for a few years before I could recover.

That sucks...people steal.tools.bern less common. As pawn shops font want them, and millenials are too lazy to use them. Look for some one who has visited dhop.in past 6 months or less..

Had an issue like this using an auto reader add. Had a few people that knew I was heading to college Fall Semester. Had a 62 vette in my barn with no one to watch. I moved it the Sunday before I went to college. During the first week I was away...some one pried the lock off the barn door...there were vehicle tracks in the yard to the door. Watch for the people looking at far more than they came to buy.....its the eyes...watch the eyes.....checking for security systems. FYI.

Nope. Nearly 90 days out. Still fighting with Insurance as well. They are baulking on their agreed value policy. It appears they have chosen an amount 30% below the policy number. I am guessing that is because if I hire a lawyer that is basically what it would cost me in fees. Not sure where it is headed at the moment but when it is done I will let the world know who they are and how they work. Fun.

I hope you can clear up all issues. Better yet to find your car. Good luck and stick to your guns.

Well I guess it is over. I signed the title of the Austin over to the insurance company today after finally settling more than 90 days after the loss. It has been a very long and frustrating experience with "SHELTER INSURANCE" whose home office is in Columbia, MO.

Even though I purchased what they called an agreed price policy...what it said somewhere in the very small print I never saw was they agreed to set the price of the policy at an agreed amount and that amount is the maximum they would pay but not the minimum. Even though I had been paying premiums on the max amount they never had any intention of paying it.

Basically after 90 days, they finally shot me an offer that was 40% off the total that their underwriter approved for my car when we started. It was pretty obvious to me they didn't look at anything I had sent them on the car, they just chose a number (likely a percentage of claim that is written in the SHELTER INSURANCE employee handbook from the claims department. This really pissed me off because we could have thrown that number at the wall 60 days ago. It wouldn't have stuck any better but it would have been out of the way a long time ago.

So I paid a professional appraisal company $300 to do a full appraisal on the unit and per SHELTER INSURANCE it had to show true market value backed up with comps etc. They did a very nice job and without knowing anything about the amount of the claim, evaluated the cars market value with $2,275.00 of the policy amount. They took a look at it and replied it was not worth the paper it was printed on (which by the way was 48 pages). They said their offer stands unchanged.

So I said if my appraisal is worthless lets see what your company did. They sent me a 7 page appraisal with two comps. Their first comp was a fairly nice 1958 Morris Minor, Gasser Clone: 350 Chevy with 350 turbo a decent set of ET rims. The second comp a 1948 Austin Dorset that owner called in the ad a street rod. It also ran a 350 small block but had 700r4 and ran Mis-matched rims (Drag Stars on the rear and Anson Front runners). I about had a fit.

Then in this report to evaluate my car they pulled 17 elements from a list of 178 unique and high end parts that I supplied them upon request. They chose things like Fuel Injection, Super Charged 454, Heads, Parachute etc, etc... Of the 17 things they chose one of the comps had none of them and the other had 2. For the missing or upgraded parts on the Austin they gave me a dollar amount that they added to comp price to accurate appraise the Austin.

For example. Since the Transmissions were different they allowed $735. Basically what they were saying was since I didn't have a $985 350 Turbo or $1250 700r4 (both prices for new units from JEGS) I got $735 added. That seems fair right...The Austin was running a $3500 Larry Larson Race Prepped Doug Nash 5 Speed with Torque Tube Case, $500 Lakewood Scatter Proof Bellhousing, $1250 5 Speed Straight Gate Hurst Shifter, $2,000 McLoed Twin 1000 HP Clutch and Throwout, Willwood clutch pedal and master cylinder. $6,000 plus of high performance stuff....$735 seems fair!

They gave me nearly $1000 since the comps didn't have fuel injection. I told them that would not even cover the 8 injectors in my system. It just went on and on like this. So today I gave them a price that I would except. They came up a bit on their end, about halfway to where I was. I said well tell you what, I have been doing quite a bit of research and I am going to officially turn you down and I am invoking the "appraisal clause". Which basically means they have to have a real company appraise my car. I said take a good look at my appraisal because that is where you are headed if not worse and that is fine with me. If you are not willing to give me what I asked (which was about 15% lower than the appraisal) then I will take it back as well and lets see what amount the appraiser come up with!

I got a call a back a few minutes later and they met my price (minus my $500 deductible) LMAO!

So, what your saying is that Shelter is not going to be insuring the Cobra?

Man Randell I am super sorry to hear all of this. I know it doesn't mean much, but I am proud or you for standing up for what is right with the insurance company.

Randall I'm glad you stood your ground they always have their hand out when the payment is due but when it's your turn it's a no go insurance is legalized extortion it doesn't matter what kind of insurance it is car home health it's all a crapshoot if I had known you had it with shelter I would have told you long ago to run like the wind I got burned by them years ago. Anyhow glad you got it settled now it's time to move on to bigger and better things

Totally sucks that Austin was one of the baddest rides on here. I hope all of us learn from your misfortune(sorry you had be the victim) to 1. never trust your insurance company and 2. Hide a GPS TRACKER in your hot rod. I'm a cheap ass but I am not going to cut corners on that. When my truck is anywhere near completion the Tracker is going in. I'll be relying on GPS and Smith & Wesson to do everything I can not to suffer this type of loss.
