HOLY ****! I've been here 30 years and I don't see it getting anything but better! I'll never forget the contributions to our scene like "the worlds Fastest Mexican", but guys like Jesse are self made and have made an impact to our hobby/lifestyle for the better, in my opinion, and of course, you are en***led to yours.
You might want to try Metamusel, tomorrow could just be a brand new day!!!

I think one of the few good things that have come from the migration of people to the Austin area id the growth of the hot rod scene. I grew up west of houston and having tsips for parents came to Austin for foot ball games and what have you this was of course a time when you knew when you left austin and got to georgetown. The big difference it seems to me in So Cal and Austin is people, not that there aren't good people in So cal I have close friends I'd give the shirt off my back to from there. Austin is a town that embraces the different aspects of culture. But thats just my 2 cents probably not worth sh!t, I mean hell I live in Round Rock a town named after ? ? ? You guessed it a round rock.

Zman, funny you should mention that. I've made that exact same comparison before. I visit Durham every year to visit family and always look forward to going to Chapel Hill and Raleigh. I get the same college-town vibe from those places, just like in Austin. I also see the same guys with beards, sandals and brown corduroy pants riding ten-speed bikes all over the place too :)

We live near ****, and I was so excited about getting to go to LSRU this year that I didn't even realize anyone else was going from this area, or we could have let you know the great places we have found in years past.

Now to deal with the people of Austin, I was telling my boys when I got home that it was so great to have MEN, actually take an interest in chivalry in TX, I didn't want for a thing even from complete strangers, and that I felt better about how my boys were doing in their evolution into manhood within the hoodlum world of hotrodding. I'm glad my boys look up to Steve W., Norm, and Reggie. I understand why Evil, Bleed, and Franco moved or are moving to Austin, it has the greatest feel ever, nonjudgement, acceptance, and caring for all.

You can tell Ryan gets thatl, when someone will diss something, and he extends a hand so they can feel what he does, instead of writing them off. That is as chivalry, acceptance, caring, and nonjudging as you can get.

Back on topic: I agree with Ryan's first post, but I'm just the wife and secretary.

With all these "testimonials" about Austin,I definitely gotta make it there soon!

Would I be more welcome in my Tbird or my King Ranch F150?:D

  16. I always ***** about Austin. But it's always about the traffic, the politics, the smelly hippies and vegans, the bad roads, the bicyclists, the bums, the cops, etc. But then I realize every city has those problems... Austin just has a more concentrated amount of them.

As far as the car guys in Austin...top notch. I am friends with and have met a large majority of the hot rodders around Austin and have to say that everyone seems to really be glad that there's more likeminded folks around. Everyone is willing to help eachother out at the drop of a hat. There are a few pieces of **** floating around, but they come & go pretty quickly after they find out that they aren't welcome.

I just wish there were more events in the area. LSRU is the king, DOTD rules, Dog & Duck is fun, but I'm sure there could be a monthly gathering of some sort, which would make the scene even more strong.

If I could find a good paying job and an affordable place to live in Austin, I'd move back in a heartbeat. For now, the weekend trips into the ATX are fine for me and I'll sit comfortably in my cheap warehouse in San Marcos.

Bring both.....you definately need to have a truck!

  18. The King Ranch truck fits right in around here, especially since the King Ranch is a mere 4 hours south of here.

I think this is a worthy subject. I can certainly understand the allure of Austin in a general sense. However, something along the way has served as a catalyst which created a surge of growth in hot rodding & customs in the area. I don't think that it's been the weather and good people that has prompted so many gearheads to migrate to Austin. Maybe, there was already a healthy hot rodding presence there that started attracting car people from the outside ... I wouldn't know.

In the near future, when new chapters are being added to the history of rodding, I feel certain that what's happening in Austin will be considered as historically significant as what occured in SoCal, Bonneville, El Mirage & so on.

    Anyway, food for thought.

  23. If I wasn't such an old fart and had known about Austin in my younger days I would not hesitate to move there. However, I am an old fart and I will live out the rest of my days here in south central Missouri. And I will try to get back to Austin the first chance I get.
Great people, great food and great cars. Can it get any better than that?
    Later,

I think Austin is the " Promise Land " of Hot Roddin'.... so, I guess that makes crossing the Rio Grande ..... like crossing the ... river Jordan ...

I think my Bachelor Party late summer/early fall will be in Austin if I can organize it. Who knows, maybe I won't go home.

I am pretty sure that Indiana is the epicenter of hot rodding and all things cultural. :)

Sounds like austin is the source for free beer as well...

There is the start of another interesting thread on the history of hot rodding in Austin. Ive been trying to dig up some information from the 50s - 70s, but haven't had much data. Anyone know/remember John Norwood who stuffed his t-bucket on the north end of Guadalupe? or the saturday night drag races on the north end of Balcones road (when Far West was a quarry?) Or any info on the Raatz brothers who raced 32 fords down in Oak Hill at the Y? Charles Axleson (Cotton) in his full-fendered 34 ford? PM me if you have any more info or stories.
