I had done a flame paint job last summer and I had found 3M 1/8" tape that I used to outline the flames and mask over. The second flame painting that I did I couldn't find the 3M again, and I found an el-cheapo brand of 1/8" tape. Well this tape was too stiff to make good curves and always wanted to separate. It was awful. My question is this, that is the tape that is best to be used for the striping outlines? The tape I used the first time (3M) was perfect, but I have no details on it besides it's width and maker. 3M seems to have a bunch of tapes on their site. Would this tape be what I used/am looking for? http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/...hicles_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_html My other question is this. I had masked over the 1/8" flames with 3" masking tape. It worked, but it was a little sloppy. Somebody had recommended getting a roll of sheets of adhesive and then just exacto-knife cutting the lines of the 1/8". I think that would be extremely easier, but again I can't find the product online. Anybody have any suggestions as to what/where I can buy?? Thanks
blue or green fine line tape tell paint supplier you need 1/8 inch fine line tape it also comes in 1/4. The green is ok but the blue is best.
That's what we used when we flamed my Fairlane. It worked great and was easy to lay out and cut. It was probably 18-24" wide. Not sure where he bought it, but I'll see if I can find out.
Autobodytoolmart.com has alot of the 3M fine line tapes... there's also a #M tape that has several different pull-outs for diff thicknesses of strip.... I use the 3M 471(blue stuff) tape all the time in the shop.
Thanks for all the information. I still can't seem to find any of this adhesive sheet covering material. rockabillydave, could you ask your buddy where he got it? That would be much appreciated. Thanks again.
Are you talking about frisket paper? its a large roll of adhesive backed paper used for artwork and can be found at many art supply stores. The blue fine line tape should be available at any automotive paint supply store.
Tcpglobal.com sells the frisket and all the fine line tapes. I like the green non-silicone better because its not as slick as the blue when the paint hits it.
Frisket. That's what it was called. Exactly what we used on the flames. He got it at a local art store.
Seeing as your in Jersey do 2 things. Lok up Autobody supplies in the Yellow pages. Ask for 3m 471 p.n 6404 1/8 or 3M 233+ p.n. 26343 1/8. They will have it for you.
galantz in fairfield(off rt 46) has the big rolls of tape...its used in the sign bizzness...i get it in rolls 12in wide, but i think they even make it bigger....its called transfer tape
I use a product called "Sticky Mickeys". It seems to be popular nationwide. You might try Norton's 1/8th inch blue tape. It is softer then the 3M. I personally use 3M's 1/8th inch green Paper tape. The edge isn't quite as clean, but it sticks a hell-of-a-lot better, and if you seal it with a coat of interim clear like HOK SG100, or X-otic's 34-200, the edge is very acceptable.
Stickey Mickeys is available through Eastwood, probably cheaper elsewhere, as well. Frisket is expensive, and soemtimes doesn't have enough "tack" to stick well on curves,
HOTROD PAINT is right on... Norton 1/4 the best. I can sell you all you want. Pm me for prices...deal direct with warehouse !. Also find a signshop and get that "Transfer Tape" or I stock that too.
I sent my wife out to buy a "good quality masking tape". Told her no cheap chinese shit.. She comes back with 3M brand.. Hmm..that should work..Good American company with a plant just a few miles away, employs a few 100 people.. So,I open this roll of 3M tape ,and the friggin shit wouldn't stick to a clean flat panel to save it's butt.. So,i read the fine print and find it's made in CHINA for 3 M... No friggin wonder North America's in a mess. In China, there's no quality control, they don't give a crap whether it works or not ! If they can't make a product that STICKS, get out of the business. Oh, the fine print says, "Libility subject to a replacement roll". I'm going to call these guys tomorrow.. just sell me something that works, that's all I ask. There , I feel better now. 1939fiat
