    I would venture a guess that it is a smaller industrial or marine engine converted for racing. I would take a look at what some of the engine makers like Continental and Lycoming and others back in the era were making....

    At the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Laguna Seca) this weekend-
    This car was designed by Col. Hall of Hall Scott but never built, until this recreation. It has been running a couple of years from what I've heard, but this is the first I've seen it.

    So that's 2008 race car?

    Please tell me how is it historic?

    This Peugeot is powered by a Hall & Scott aero engine.
    Too many oil leaks with the 148 engine.:rolleyes::)

    Thanks all for the information.

    Based on the comments that I received, it appears that the Targa Florio held on May 18, 1908 was indeed the first race that had below-ground pits. However, I also can not find any images to document it.

    I did find a photo from the French Grand Prix de l'ACF held in Dieppe on July 7, 1908:

    The 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race was likely the first use of pits in the United States.
