  3. ok...all you crazy kids, any one here heard about Coker and some deal involving recreating all the cars for the original Indy 500 to make a movie? External's are all to detail, but modern engines.

did this ever come to fruitation...

Nice shot of some serious race watchers who had more than one "finish" on their minds. Location ?

The chap in the dark suit next to Couper's car is Charlie Joyce of Pass and Joyce, the team's sponsor. Pass and Joyce were sole Talbot distributors for London and the Home Counties and the cars are posed outside their premises.

This photo is captioned as being Vittorio Jano from Alfa Romeo. He appears to be with what possibly is a most unusual 6 cyl. experimental engine.

The mag on the right side only has two leads going to the rear cylinders so maybe it is driving the small test engine to the left.

Does anyone know for sure what we are being shown??

Looks like 4 small and 2 large exhaust (?) pipes between the legs of the stand--and an intake (?) that snakes across the top of all the cylinders, and ends by Jano's left hand---strange. Notice that there is a pressure (again?) gauge in that pipe. Possible that there are two more plug wires that go between the large cylinders to the small ones? Then possibly the large cylinders supercharge the small ones? But no carb to be seen anywhere.

Why do you mess with my head like this? :D:D

OK , possibility #2-- Large cylinders exhaust into smaller ones--an attempt to "compound" a IC engine?

I think that this is more plausible

I think I need a double shot of Granddad.

I can't comment on the engine although it shows some similarities with the Alfa Romeo 115 inverted aero produced some 20 years after this photo.

I believe the gentleman in the photo is Giuseppe Merosi. A.L.F.A.'s first Cheif Designer. Vittorio Jano started with Alfa Romeo in the early 1920s.

Dear Mr Kaput........We mess with you head like this to keep you on your toes*****

I wonder if that might be a vacuum gauge??

Kurtis.....You are right..... I went back and reread the caption which states that Jano replaced Merosi who is in the photo. My mistake....

Yes, it is Merosi. I've seen this picture before, but never an explanation of what the thing actually is. Assuming the date on the picture is either 1900 or 1906, this would be before Merosi actually joined ALFA: in 1900 he was probably with O&M (Orio & Marchand), who were building their first car. According to Borgeson this had much in common with the contemporary Decauville. In 1905 or thereabouts Merosi seems to have worked for FIAT for a year before moving to Bianchi in 1906, where he is said to have designed all the company's cars between 1907 and 1909. So it seems to be something to do with either O&M or Bianchi ...

Of course ;) I believe the whole stamp actually says something like "Archivo Storico Alfa-Romeo". But of course that is no guarantee that the mechanism is an A-R production.

From the number plate, it's in Germany. Berlin, to be precise.
