Given the support vehicle is ahead of the race car, would it be safe to assume cars in earlier eras were started from a tow strap rather than being pushed? For some reason I've just always assumed these kinds of cars were always pushed off. Until this pix, for some reason I've never really noticed they didn't have rear nerfs. Duh. They don't call me Mr. Observant for nothing! Gary

Yes, Early dirt cars were started with a rope, used to do that with my restored Riley 4Port. The rope goes over the axle and the driver holds the rope in his right hand. Care is taken to place the drivers end to the outside of the loop so you can throw it free once the car lights and the tow car pulls away. Fun stuff, great memories. :)

  8. 37, you nailed it. After the car started & the driver let go of the rope with a toss,
then going up the backstretch, they would adjust their goggles or some other
little quirk, and then, the GREEN FLAG. ( sorry I got carried away)

I've been coming in on and off for the past couple of days and your little red light seems to be on all the time. What, daytime TV too boring for ya?;)

Seriously though, get well soon mate.:)

I suspect this record promoted the Maybach Co. as a reliable engine manufacturer that did little to help the struggling Spyker.

Thanks for this and the AM link.

I catch a couple of hours here and there but i'm mostly banging my big toe into the bed post. The bike will be sitting for a while or until i feel human again and not nocturnal. Speaking of which, i might go and hang with the possum's that are in the backyard now.

Ascot Speedway in California, probably 1933. I believe the racing car is the (Leon) Duray/Miller.

The pic shows the entrance to the infield on the backstretch, there being no tunnel or bridge. The cars on the track are heading towards the slightly banked North turn, or Turn 3 in today's parlance.
