After seeing Carl's pics no question it is Del Mar. Back in 1981 I spent a few months at the Surf and Turf RV park with my motorhome and was there every day right next to Del Mar race track. The hillside looked familiar but the perspective looked a bit off. Plus I even asked my wife who worked at Del Mar and she said it did not look familiar (better take the fifth though on any further comments on that score). Pretty cool pics plus Ralph does look like a young guy there.

The pics of Mays is a bit much for my taste though.-Jim

Here's a couple pictures of one of the "Around the Houses" ARCA races held in my little town of Alexandria Bay NY in the 30's. If anyone has any other pictures from this event, I'd love to see them.

What I'd give for Mr. Peabody's "Wayback Machine" !!

I think this is a different year, Dewart again in an MG with Heller in a Willys special.

Thanks so much for those Chris!

This is the same corner as the crossed up MG that I posted above, rounding the end of the Monticello Hotel onto Market St. The hotel is still there - but dilapidated, the area behind (where the cars are parked) is now the site of the River Hospital.

Leonidis is quite a famous car, still exists I think?

These cars are turning off Bolton Ave. onto Church St, just north of the Arch, for anyone who knows the town --

    Again -- Thanks!

Found this one in my uncle's shoebox of old racing photos. Looks like an earlier photo than the 1957 copy date.

Definitely-maybe they snapped a photo of a photo in 1957.

Not sure-maybe a Model T based racer with hand built racing body.

Photo probably taken in the Teens.

    Buildy,

The photo above appears to be from the 1913 Dick Ferris Trophy at Santa Monica.

    Thank you Kurtis.

I`m guessing my Maxwell car #14 photo is from 1914.

    Buildy,

I thought Oldfield was still with Mercer in 1914 but in a previous discussion with Jim Dillon he pointed out the #14 in the photo above is the Eddie O'Donnell driven Duesenberg at the 1914 Corona race. I had initially thought it was Oldfield.

    Kurtis,

Isn`t the photo you just posted from 1916?

This is the race I think my photo might be from.

It seems Barney started out 1914 in the Mercer and at the end of the season at Corona was in the Maxwell.
In the middle he drove the Stutz at Indy and Elgin! Busy guy.

    I believe you are correct.

I checked Champ car stats and it looks like it is 1913 at Indy George Clark-Tulsa.
Check out the truss rods and turnbuckle set-up on that one. Just like an old boxcar.

An old press photo that showed up on e-bay.

I love that kind of stuff.

Yes, Jim corrected me on this. Personally, i am not so sure.

As to your photo, go back to page 13 and post # 256, click the link in my post and you will find a photo of Oldfield sitting in a Maxwell dated 1914.

Buildy I believe you and Kurtis are correct that the #14 is the Maxwell driven by Oldfield in 1914. As to the photo above that we discussed before, the tip-off to me that I believed it to be 1916 was the #3 car. That I am quite sure is Oldfield in his 1914 OHC Delage which he bought I thought in late 1915 (without checking my records)-the same car he put one of the first Miller 289 fours in early in 1917. In the Corona April 8, 1916 race Oldfiled, had to park his Delage after 47 laps with a broken rocker.

Some other great pics of Oldfield thanks-I like the non skid tires-I had several sets of those-Jim

    Kurtis,

Thanks for the link to the Corona photos.

I`d love to have a set of those photos, but that place is a wee bit pricey for me.

    RE Oldfield,

Would any of you have any good photos of Barney Oldfield`s Railroad car that hauled his racers around the country?
I have a really crummy photo that is in sections of it.

I am very interested in the early racing and railroads as their transport mode.
Any photos showing race cars and their railroad cars would be most appreciated!
I do have several photos of railcars and race cars such as The Golden Sub,and a Duesenberg being loaded into a regular boxcar. I also have photos of Barney posing near Railroad passenger cars, etc.

I believe I read that IMCA had a dedicated train to haul the cars in the teens.

Buildy I hope this request of yours yields some results. One of my favorites is the painting in Walden's book of the Golden Sub being delivered by rail to its maiden voyage at Maywood (all the way from Miller's shop).

Although this photo of the Hudson is quite common I still enjoy it.

As I understand Sloan's shop in Joliet where the Miller racers burned (Sub, Cadwell and Rocket car-per Bill Castle-he is quite sure on the Rocket car which he saw and had heard the other two were the Sub and the Cadwell car), the cars were sitting on a false floor made of wood with a crawl space below when they burned (the oil soaked floor with the big air space below added to the size and heat of the fire making sure the cars were cooked). The reason for it was that Sloan made the wood floor at the same height as the RR siding so he could load the cars easily when taking them out for the racing cards.

I wish someone would do a book on some of these sidelights like the RR cars (as well as the patrons that helped pay the bills). It is a side of racing that we have missed out on-sadly-Jim
