I have a 50 Ford coupe with a flat head 6. Is there a automatic transmisson that will work with this?? Thanks!!
Fordomatic trans didn't come out until 1951........don't know if it will bolt up to a six cylinder Ford...it *may*....ask Shoebox Chris here on the board........he runs www.shoeboxford.com Expert on all things Shoebox Ford.... CB
I can tell you that if it does fit (I suspect it will) you'll need a different crossmember and will need to move it back a few inches.
I feel fairly certain the '51 flathead sixes were available with Ford-o-matic, the Standard Catalog of American Cars does lists the Ford-o-matic as a factory option with no noted restrictions as to engine type. I suspect that is a pretty rare bird though. But IF you could find one.......it requires a different bellhousing for a six vs V8, it should be doable. However, the floor pan trans hump was increased in size/height in '51 models to acccommodate the Ford-o-matic, so that is mod you would need to make. What just may be feasible is to modify one of the flathead V8 to C4 cruiseomatic adapters to work on your six. As stated above, the starter plate/bellhousing is different from the flatty six to flatty V8, but not THAT different. The C4 would be far better choice from an efficency and performance standpoint, and due to it's more compact dimensions, MAY not require floor mods. Worth investigating, I think. Ray
If you're like me and and have more questions than answers about your shoebox (I'm building a 50' Sedna) ShoeboxFord is the place.
