Just thinking about various automotive terminology and in particular “bbl”. I know what it stands for but barrel has only one “b” so where did the second one come from?

    "Motor versus engine."
I just took the engine cycle down the engine way to get a couple quarts or engine oil!

  9. No one really knows for sure. It has been used since at least the early 1800's on ship manifests. Some think it was used to delineate between barrels and bales that may have been already using the bl abbreviation. Some seem to think it may have been pluralizing barrel for shipping purposes.

The use of a blue barrel to signify 42 gallons of crude oil, the industry standard. bbl for "blue barrel"

I just want to point out that none of this is my fault!
I'm just using the same stupid words and abbreviations others before me have made "normal".

  16. bbl was being used to signify barrel long before the oil industry even existed.

  17. Maybe, the original term was coined by someone with a slight stuttering or stammering problem, that could explain the extra letter "b". :D

Referring to barrels ,we also have 50 gal. Drums ,as opposed to 42 gal barrels ,which are a!so referred to as drums . Blame the English language if you like !

This is correct, blue barrel = BBL. strictly oil field terminology.

Why are they called points when they are flat, not pointed?
