Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars!

  2. Not gonna likely happen IMO. But if it does or drivers continue to get worse to the point I fear going out, I'll pour a concrete pad, put my T on it (provided I ever finish it), and brick up around it. I'll just go out there and sit in it or beside it and just look at it. For hours. Admire it. Rub it with them street rodder wipes. I hate traffic anyhow. I'll ride a horse. Horses are cool. But like I said, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Not ALL cars. The autonomous ones will know exactly which ones aren't. The ones that don't communicate back, but swerve all over the road, are driven by a distracted human. :)
Sure. The government can force you to buy something, even if you don't want it. That was the big gripe about Obamacare, remember? The precedent is set, slippery slope, here we go.
Already in motion, my friend. Next time you're at the DMV, ask them how a dune buggy is substantially different from an AV8.

PS, I have no problem with old tech. I am getting my '57 392 ready to drop in now. Stone age stuff!

I Do not know anything about this technology , but I would assume there would need to be some type of infrastructure for all these self driven cars to be able to talk to each other so to speak. Just like electric cars, mass production would require extensive networks of charging stations. Most major cities are already over taxing their power grids. Additional power plants? No one wants them in there backyard! And another example would be high speed train systems. Funny thing is that a number of years ago Wisconsin was suppose to get one. It would have connected Chicago Through Milwaukee to Saint Paul. It was all set, the Federal funding was in place, it would have create tons of jobs, ect. ect. Then we had an election and the current political party came in to power and voted to cancel the whole deal. Then they pass bills to spend hundreds of millions to expand our Interstate system from Chicago to Saint Paul to increase traffic flow of cars and trucks! The only thing I DO know is that our hobby as we know it will die because we will die and eventually no one will care! Larry

  6. I've been watching all this for some time now.
I've no idea on how long before driverless cars become reality, but electric cars are coming on fast.

When cars first came about, it was only about ten years before horses were redundant. So we shouldn't be surprised how fast these electric shitters will be taking over.

Toyota, ( can I say that here?) Said recently, that the petrol engine will be around untill 2050.

Hybrids are where we are headed for now. Maybe we will all be stuffing batteries into the trunks of our hot rods, to run small electric motors, to complement our dinosaur combustion engines?

I mentioned on here over a year back, that someone should start making fiberglass V8 engine blocks, that can fit an electric car engine inside. Everyone I mention this to, says it wouldn't sound right. Well BMW have a system where the V8 sound is pumped through its car speakers, already in production cars, lol.

Fuck em all, at 51, I hope I'm not around to see the demise of our beloved Hot Rods, will they become like horses? Load em on the trailer, take it to a show, then bring it home and back in the shed?

Will this make them worth less? Only time will tell.

This is why I like cars AND guns.
Banning drivers? At that point, I won't mind being an outlaw.

It's a bit like an ad we had in Australia a few years ago. It was for a non alcoholic drink called Claytons and it was marketed as the 'drink you have when not having a drink'. Now anyone who was around then, refers to things that are the same but different as being 'Claytons'.
To me driving an electric car is like driving a 'Claytons' car, as in, why would you bother. I'm nearly 61y.o. and I still love 'driving' a car with gears and the feel of the vehicle around me. I drive a truck for a living and am getting twitchy because the mob I work for is replacing the fleet with automatics. You go from being a driver to a steering wheel attendant. I still think that driver quality, whether it be truck or car, has diminished since the advent of doodads to make driving easier. Once upon a time drivers had to think about changing down before a corner and accelerating smoothly out of it. Now it's floor it, race up to the corner, stand on the brakes, go around corner braking, floor it again and heaven help anyone in the way. Most don't care about the 'art' of driving.
Don't get me started on electric drag cars. Yes, the mechanics of it is mildly interesting but the spectacle of it, YAWN.

  9. Wonder if a driverless vehicle could handle this load at night for 500 kilometers in light snow ?

  10. This is depressing. Mostly because we're along for the ride. Eff 'em all, time to go out and burn rubber!

What scares me a LOT more are auto driving semi-trucks!!! Those are being tested now.
Best new stupid kids in stolen cars / Hollywood movie idea? Playing "super chicken" with two auto braking cars heading at each other at 100 mph! Where is Johnny Depp when you need him? Gary

Autonomous driving doesn't really make sense in the country, but it does in the city. A lot of people would go for a car that drove itself to work, so they could fuck around on their phones or whatnot -hell I would. However, I think they would need to embed some high frequency wires in the road bed, as well as the vision and proximity sensors. I also don't see why you couldn't drive an non-autonomous vehicle in the same lane. I think there is a lot worry about nothing here. I bet the market brings this to the people before the government does.

As long as manufacturers keep building driver and performance oriented cars we are safe.... Think of the shitload of 10 year old Lamborghinis, Ferrarris, M3s, Porsches , hellcats , corvettes that would become obsolete over night in case a ban was intriduced 20 years from now.... My brother in law is here at BMW writing software for autonomic driving... Even he doubts that these systems will be availible to the general public within the next two decades, not for technical but for liability reasons. It'll make some sense for public transportation in big cities in a couple decades, but for individuals it will only be optional, for example of someone is stuck in traffic and tired of driving...I don't think a ban for old cars is anywhere near realistic even in a 50 year span...
To much fun, they could aswell ban having sex then.....

It's coming, I don't like it, but it is coming.
The Kenworth I drive at work I've had for about 200,000 miles and still don't like the auto-braking,collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control system and automatic trans

Whenever this discussion comes up I always have two responses:

    Boat Launch

    Farm Field

I'm not worried about everything going autonomous. I'm worried about our community becoming more of niche and driving costs on things like gasoline and oil up.

I can imagine a new past time, where I can watch thousands of You tube vids being posted of our beloved rednecks outfitting their trucks with guards/plows to pitt unoccupied autonomous cars in ditches around the country:D

We are all "polishing the brass on the Titanic" to quote Chuck Palahniuk.

The only thing to do is enjoy the remaining time we have left with our chosen hobby. I envy those of you on the forum who will not be around to see this transition.

A few years ago I asked my 99 year old grandpa what the greatest invention that he has ever seen in his lifetime. His answer “The spare tire”.

Hey, at least the car insurance companies will go bust if we go to driverless cars.

I don't think I'd want to share the road with that dipwad even if he had an automatic trans!

any job that requires hand eye coordination, manual dexterity
or individual thought processes is being suppressed
as if in an effort to create a mindless population of sheep ready and willing to be fleeced.

there will always be free thinkers, artists and nonconformists but,
the majority will always be sheep mindlessly following whatever is put before them.

time for the sheep to stand up on their own two feet and lead themselves to a better more soul satisfying future!
