  1. I don't know about any of you, but when I see a newer high end performance car (Porsche, Ferrari, etc.) flying down the road and it's covered with road dirt, brake dust all over the wheels, I get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

If I had the money, I'd be driving the piss out of one of those cars, the time it takes having it "detailed" is taking away from time that could be spent driving it.

Cars don't get dirty sitting in the garage, If that dirt was gained screaming down I-75, in Detroit, in early March, in a car without a heater, or side glass, or a roof, dirt is a badge of honor.

By the way, when did we stop washing cars in the driveway for the cost of soap and water, and start getting them detailed for $150? Brilliant bit of marketing there... Anyway...

P.S. Customs should be clean, the whole point of a custom is the appearance.

  3. The Autorama started in the fifties and if you think that all rods were 4 years old and not rusty, you are wrong. In Detroit, a car will rust in six months. To think that a Detroit car was 25 years old, like a Model A, and not rusty is not the way it was. To state something as fact when you weren't there is just talk, nothing more. I was at the first Autorama, and I was at this last one and I still enjoy the show. Good, bad, whatever, I still enjoy the show.

People like the "Rat Rodz" for the same reasons they like "American Idol": They want to believe that they can do it too. And, if they can't do it, they'll buy a Tshirt from someone who can. As long as people will pay to see 'em, "Rat Rodz" will be in the Autorama, because merchants will rent space at Autorama. I hope it's for a good long time.

Now, on the subject of pride and driveability, let me point this out: There was a custom that was driven 400 miles in the cold and sleet to the basement of Cobo Hall that walked away with two awards: a judged trophy, and a pro's pick as well. Pride, and a little soapy water.

As for my car, I washed the car when i got there, but I left the rims dirty so you'd know I drove it in. I was honored to have my car in the Superbowl of auto shows, and I'll never forget it.

Indoor car shows (much like this thread) are a vanity tool...
