How can I re use my factory box in my av8. I don't want the f1 box . Not right now. Or can I buy a direct bolt on that wil work,? I need help! I'm posting build thread tomorrow also
Rebuild it, or if its in good shape, just use it. Why wouldn't you want the F1 box? It's a nice, dead simple, bullet proof steering upgrade in an early car.
What I ment to ask was is it able to just be relocated ? I want an f1 box eventually. But right now is like to use what I have and not worry about it for a few years
Dude, I sure wouldn't want to steer that thing with a V8 and stock "A" box! Have you ever driven a stocker "A"? That'll put some meat on your arms pretty quick at lower speeds, not to mention it's just about as precise as say, adobe bricks. F-1 stuff is all over the place, cheap and simple to convert, not to mention recirculating ball so they can actually be turned and won't wear out in a couple of years. Do it once and do it right the first time.
Yes you can build a box on the out side of the frame rail. I think it is a little over a 1". but move it as much as you can. I have done this on a few cars over the years, my blue Roadster has a Model A box with Flathead V8. If you are worried about it steering hard you can use a shorter steering arm from the A suppliers. I never had a problem steering my cars with the stock arms.
I have to agree, stock A's can be a bear to steer even stock let alone with a V8. I've had stock A's for 50 years. Go with F-1 or even something like the "aftermarket" A boxes. Check out www.ezsteer.net.
"I don't want to worry about it for a few years " Then do as suggested. I "sailed" my coupe before someone clued me into the F1. Now I steer it! Just do it you will not regret it, you will if you don't change it. Now if not yesterday is the time to do it.
Do yourself a huge favour, ditch that old box and slot in an F1 box, simple conversion, relitivley inexpensive and the difference is like night and day! Do it now and you won't regret it
