Unique king pin suspension with center steer, they handle like a slot car, I have a '54 coupe and an upgrade to R&P and disc brakes is all needed to outhandle vette's upto C4 series, they are built to last.

Want to see Avanti's of all types set up for racing and setting records every day? Go to RacingStudebakers.com. Everything from a 299 inch drag Avanti going 9.79 140+ to 223+mph Bonneville bullets. If that's not enough try the Burke Bros Avanti. Bonnevile record holder at 239.208 and recorded at over 250 mph. Just so you know I have one that is on loan to me to go Bonneville racing. Tell me it is'nt a thing of beauty?

If you don't think so then maybe your the wierdo!
By the way the green Avanti on the salt is the world record holder at 223+ mph and is Studebaker 289 powered. The Gold Avanti # 1963 is the record holder at Bonneville, El Mirage and Muroc in the Production Class with a 289 Stude engine, so that means it is the fastest production car against all brands, bowtie and oval included. Must be that weirdo slippery shape.

I think Avantis are OK looking, but I'd waaay rather have a '53.

  5. Yea a wierdos car for sure. The one the Ol' Man always wanted and never had. I would like to own one myself, had a chance to buy a '68 dressed like a '64 a couple of years back.

    great looking cars I think.

If you land one I have a few pieces for you. They are left over from one I built for a fella back around '03.

I have had 2 - 1st '63 r-1 w/ fact a/c /2nd '81 Avanti II. Both were cool, , the '81 came w/ 305 H.O. that they put in Z-28 that yr. , easier to get driveline parts for. Sold to a guy only 3 miles from where I live- have never seen again!

Had a friend who was looking to buy an Avanti here in the Northeast a few years ago. Ones with lower prices and ones that had ever been stored for a while outside or in a damp garage usually had rotted out hog troughs. They would have had to be replaced. It is NOT an easy task. See:
    http://www.avantisource.com/hogtroughs.html

There is a long time Stude collector and car seller on the Stude discussion boards who has owned and sold a lot of Avantis. He has a saying that a lot of Stude fanatics agree with:
"There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Avanti".
A lot of low priced Avantis get sold to well meaning people who do not know a lot about cars but like the look of Avantis, and think restoring an Avanti would be "fun". If they cannot do the bulk of the mechanical work, it gets very expensive, very quickly.
If you want an Avanti try to find one that was in a heather garage all its life, or that comes from a warm weather state like Texas, CA, Arizone, etc.

Stude people did not like the 4 door "Avanti". They pretty much only like the ones Studebaker made in the 60s, and not the Chevy V8 powered ones that came later even though they used left over Stude frames for a couple of years.
The 4 door one was not an attractive car and I believe it went on a stretched Camaro or Firebird chassis and even used that windshield. They probably sold less than 100 as no one else wanted one.
