Technical Aviation fuel, should I be using it?

I run regular pump gas in my 52 Dodge powered by a 330 Desoto Hemi. Motor seems to like it. It’s a matter of quality and the CR you are running. CR in the Hemi calculated out to 9.4. Only problem with pump gas these days is it goes bad quickly. Here in Phoenix we get our fuel from Cali. Who knows what chemicals the put into their fuel. I run Stabil when the vehicle sits more than 6 weeks.

"Go to your Harley Dealer and ask for a bottle of the 'stuff that removes water.'
You want the larger bottle $29. A little goes a long way.
Proven to remove water from gas."

The other way is to simply add water to the gasoline and shake it up. The water and alcohol will form a separate layer, and then the ethanol free gasoline can be decanted off. It will have somewhat lower octane rating though.

Just this year ethanol has become a major problem in my area. Twice in four months I had to repair the same lawn mower - each time it mysteriously got a couple spoonfuls of water in the fuel tank. Same with a chainsaw I was working on tonight.
In both cases the gasoline looks and smells fresh - it still is, it's just that in our humid climate as air travels in and out of "open" fuel systems the moisture in it gets absorbed by the ethanol in the fuel.

Ethanol in fuel, and E85, have their place and I choose to buy the latter at times for specific purposes. However it's frustrating to not be able to buy any ethanol free gasoline here now, and then suffer the inevitable damage to small engines and old, rarely driven cars. This damage and the expense and machinery wastage I am quite sure is not counted to the negative, when ethanol is touted as an environment saving champion.

That's cheaper per gallon than I pay for 92 octane clear here. No road tax obviously. They don't pump it directly into your car do they?

I just bought 5 gallons of 100 LL yesterday. It was $5.67 a gallon. I mix it 1/4 to 3/4's part non-ethenol gas in my flathead powered AV8 roadster. I like the shelf life it provides and, to me, the motor runs really well with this mixture.

We have a local airport that keeps its self-serve pumps open 24/7.

According to the engineer I knew back then, yes, more than just ethanol for stability in high pressure injection systems. His words, "...more light ends..." describing today's gas. Thats what stuck with me and I related it in my mind to not having the good stuff our race fuels and old school premium used to have. As lean as engines run today it makes sense and the fact is we get way more energy out of the fuels today than we ever did. The other fact is that gas in the 30s was shit. Our plain ol 87 regular is better than what got pumped into that $6,000 Packard or $600 Ford. I routinely get away with at least 2 degrees extra lead in the timing and they love it. Smooth idle, good power, no ping. Smooth enough to balance a nickle on a running V-12;)
