Im trying to figure out what rear axle is in a project that I have acquired. It looks like a ford 9". Has 10 bolts, sold housing and removable third member. It has what looks like "Big Ford" backing plate flanges, but the weird part is the Pinion housing isn't removable, and the yoke flange is unlike one I have ever seen. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  2. Looks like a 49-56 Ford car rear. Center section parts availability pretty much nil.

Don't know what your car is but if it is from a 49-54 Ford like Jim said an 8" from a Maverick is 56 1/4" WMS to WMS and earlier 8.8 Rangers were the same WMS to WMS. Change the spring mounts and you should be good to go with either unit.

  5. ^^^^ what he said. That rear had limited ratios available when produced and there are very limited parts to be found. They hold up reasonably well under 300 HP. The 8" early Maverick is a bolt in swap width wise and is what I used in my 53. I had to move the spring perches 3/4" on each side.

would a newer third member be a reasonable swap into this for parts servicability or should I look for a different axle?

Also, This is in a 1940 Ford Coupe. And thanks for all the help!!!

  8. 1956 was the last year this rear was made, and other than a few bearings, parts have long dried up. These rears also suffered from limited ratio selection. I would explore a newer axle.

Yep them Mavericks is all over the place.

In my life I have seen.....One.....(That I know of or noticed)
I did have a “Mighty Maverick” Hot Wheel when I was 6.

I have seen many many more Shoebox Fords than I ever have Mavericks.

The 56 1/4" Ranger 8.8's are easier to find than a Maverick but the later wider ones are more readily available but they are about 58 inches or so IIRC. But they can be narrowed and you can use a narrow side axle in stead of the longer one so you don't have to shorten an axle, just the housing.
