I HAVE A 48 FORD THAT COVERED TO OPEN DRIVESHAFT Have replaced seal twice in about 1,000 miles. Dropped driveshaft today. with the pin and set screws still end, I have about .0040 play up and down. If i take set screws and pin out I have even more play. The ring and pinion have about 3,000 mils on them. NEED HELP. Thanks

  2. You should edit the thread title from axle seal to pinion seal, may get more response.

Sounds like the pinion bearings are loose. Did you replace them?

What brand of open drive conversion did you use? There have been complaints from the users of a certain brand.

sounds like you have to much play in the pinon bearings. remove the first nut then the locking bent washer. now tighten the remianimg nut while feeling the pinon shaft. tighten till all play is gone. then tighten about 5lbs pre load sounds like pinion bearings may be failing or if rear was rebuilt proper pre load was not set .

First I had one from S......Y that was foreign made so returned and got American made kit from HotRodWorks.
The yoke is loose on the pinon shaft.

I expect your pinion shaft splines are worn. That is fairly common on original pinion shafts.

I think you maybe mean .040?
Remove the Yoke and measure again, should narrow it down between the bearings/splines. Or a combination of both.

Seeing as the pinion only has 3000 miles on it I would not have thought that the spline are worn. I would buy a HotRod Works yoke kit and try that on the pinion first.

The ring and pinion were brand new only 3,000 miles ago? Then the splines won’t be worn. The original splines were commonly worn when the coupler pin broke and let the coupler slide back and forth a bit. Unless the Chinese yoke was loose and ruined them before you bought the good HRW kit.

Please tell us if you used new bearings when you assembled this rearend.
