I'm installing a 9" ford in my 53 ford. Problem is I need a axle for one side of the rearend and cant seem to find the right length. I was wondering if an axle out of a 10 bolt chevy would work in the 9".
uhhh....no. Just what is it you need the axle to be like? length (overall and to wheel bearing), spine count, bolt pattern, bearing size, etc? maybe someone has one laying around....I have a bunch in my shed, for example.
ok, I need a 31 7/8th or 1/4 inch shorter shaft 28 spline bearing size doesnt matter because you can get a bearing to fit anything. I just thought if the shaft diameter of the chevy axle was the same it would work in the 9 inch. A 28 spline axle is a 28 spline axle right? I could cut the c clip retainer off the end and it would work. I dont know just a thought. I can get a Moser for over $100. I would rather spend less.
70-71 Mustang, Cougar, Torino, Fairlane. (9") Right side...28 spline...31 3/4" All 28 splines the same? I can't see that being carved in stone...but I never did measure all of them! Theres a LOT more going on to make an axle fit than just the spline...
No, you can't get a wheel bearing to fit anything, it needs to be the right one, there are only a few standard sizes, and the inside and outside diameters are not mix-n-match like you think they are. And Chevys use those cheezy roller bearings, instead of ball bearings, so the bearing area is a different size. PM me with the bearing OD, and distance from the bearing to the flange, and I'll see if I have one.
Ok you narrowed the rear? or its stock width width rear? if stock width do you know what it came from, IE '57-9 ford car, or '76 truck? If you narrowed it and there is a shop in town that can respline an axle your best bet is it get one cut and resplined, otherwise buy a pair of custom axles from Dutchman or Strange or any number of other companies. If you need an axle to get cut down or have a specific year rear I have some extra axles here.
I'm not sure what car it is out of. I do know it is a car though. 4 1/2 bolt circle. It is a big bearing axle. I'm thinking I might just shorten the side to match the other side because I have three axles laying around. But if anyone has the right axle I would be interested in buying it from them.
Ive had Moser Engineering cut and respline several axles. Super outfit to deal with and not overpriced. Call them and they will walk you thru what they need in a stock length that can be cut to your specs.
If you cut one side to match the other then your pinion will be off center when you get the rear under the car. Not a good thing. Stick a tape in it and measure from the inside of the axle gear to the outside face of the houseing end. Post the number or mail it to me or squirrel. We'll dig throuhg our stuff and see if we have an axle that will work. Als better count the splines on the axles. they should be either 28 or 31 spline. Can I ***ume that it isn't a round or dimple back rear end? If its one of those i have a pair of axles that are the right length that I won't be using.
OK dumb question but you do know that both axles are not the same length. Only mention that because when I went the other way finding 28 spline axles for my early ford/halibrand project I needed two the same length. I took apart two rears to get the same length axles. A nine inch diff. is offset so the axles are different lengths.
The only big bearing axles I have are a truck that's 33" long, and an early car with the narrow brakes that's 30.5" long.
As long as you guys are digging through your 9" axles, I could use a short side (p***?) side axle for a '57-'59 small bearing rear. Not sure of the length, or where to look it up.
I have to save that axle for the small bearing 57 housing I have...sorry! it's 26" from the outside of the flange to the end of the spline, and 2-3/16" from the outside of the flange to the bearing shoulder.
Good news! I finally found one and it was only $40. Will be shipped on Monday. Got it from ChockoStang. Ever heard of them? You guys have been a big help. I just want to say thanks.
The short (left) side is 26 1/16". The F-100 were equal length at 30". Hollanders used to list all the lengths, spline count, bearing.
