I have a Super Bell Tube axle and some Pete & Jakes spindles I want to get powder coated, will I need to put in new king pins and bushings? I plan to tape or place cork plugs in the holes.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Tape up everything you don't want coated (holes and spindle from seal surface out), I've used gorilla tape as it needs to go through blasting (light or heavy). You can push in new bushings and wait to ream them, if I remember correctly the parts are baked at 450 or so.

Depending on the blasting media masking tape may be sufficient to protect the bushings and spindle, ask the company doing the blasting. No need to remove or replace bushings if they are in good condition. Masking tape will survive in the baking oven and will still do its job, but it will go brittle and sticky so use WD40 to clean the sticky stuff off afterwards. I have a powdercoat oven and blasting booth and do this all the time, i use stainless steel shot blasting media. Just make sure there is no oil or grease in the component whatsoever.

No need to mask it,just tell the painter the areas you don`t want any paint.
He will do it for you.
