Well boys, Flow, Dawg, very little is happening with the lumber wagon. Stuck in the middle of basement reno's. Need more room for daughter #1 coming home for Christmas with 2 kids, 2 dogs, and her hubby. With Daughter #2 and grandson living with us, there was no more rooms at the Inn. After Christmas I am in Maui for 3 weeks, so looks like it will be a while before anything happens.
I am ashamed to say.....very, very little has been done. Many personal hurdles in life have slowed me down, but I started in on it again yesterday. So hopefully soon there will be some progress to report.
What a sad thread this has been. So much enthusiasm when I started this build. Life gets in the way of lots of stuff, this build has been pushed to the back burner too many times. Today I got back on it and will not stop until I am driving. So I have a couple issues right off the start. It looks like the truck was hit on the right side, and where the fender attaches to the body, the metal is creased. Rather than trying to straighten this piece, I think I will cut it all out and replace it. I have a lot of the caged nuts in this piece that have broken off bolts that I cannot remove. Damaged parts I think this part is supposed to be flat
OK, another question, how do you remove the window crank? Do you just punch out the pin through the crank handle?
Yes , if it has a chrome peace covering it up push it towards the panel then push out pin . Glad to see you working on it again B- BOP . That fender mount that's bent in , can you get to the back or is it covered up ? I had a piece that was like that and I put a piece of********* the out side and used a c clamp and worked it out slowly. But might be easier to cut and replace . Have fun . Blue
The original pins were tappered and push out only one direction or you can beat them and usually your hand or finger. Push from the bottom.l have a crease on the front of the fender mounting surface where the fender must have been hit. You can usually tell these trucks were used as trucks.
Well it looks like this thread has gathered more than its fair share of cobwebs. This post is not being made to elicit sympathy, empathy or anything else. Maybe someone will read it and is going through some***** in their life and will help them get over the hump. My last post on this thread was 15 days before my youngest daughter died of a drug overdose on March 5/2017. Actually she died 3 times that night, and 3 times they restarted her heart. She was in ICU in a coma for 5 days and then in multiple hospitals for 11 months to relearn how to walk, talk, and eat. She suffered what is called an Anoxic brain injury. This is when the brain is robbed of the oxygen that is required to keep all of its cells living. The same injury is seen in drowning, choking, and heart attack, and stroke patients. Our lives were put on hold as we helped her thorough her rehabilitation. Kimmy also had a 4 year old son at the time. We have taken care of him since that day. He manages to keep us busy enough to keep putting one foot in front of the other and move forward. Just prior to this event I was laid off, right sized, restructured or whatever you want to call it out of my job. This was somewhat of a blessing as it allowed me to concentrate on both my daughter and grandson full time. Fast forward to May 20, 2018. My oldest daughter, who lives in Las Vegas lost what would have been our first granddaughter. She was close to full term and we nearly lost our daughter as well. It took 8 full units of blood to keep her alive and was touch and go for a day or so. She did manage to get pregnant one more time and we had our only granddaughter enter the world on July 8, 2019 Life has kicked the***** out of me for the past 5 years. This Covid********* has not made it any easier. My mental state was pretty messed up. I lashed out at people for the stupidest things. Some on this forum. Sorry Blue, I just was not right in the head at the time. I have managed to do little bits here and there over the last 4 years so I will start to get caught up on this build thread in the next couple days. If you are going through a***** time, reach out to someone and talk it out. If you don't know anyone with a good ear, I am always willing to listen. Now back to the build.........
Good to see you are still with us Barry. Life can really be a****** sometimes for sure. I'll bet that grandson of yours is getting really big since I saw him last. Looking forward to watching your build.
Glad to see you back, Barry. Very sorry to hear about your losses. It sounds like you've been able to abide by "when you're going through Hell, keep going!"... Your grandson must be about 8 now? I'm sure that's a challenge at times, but I bet the joy that young man brings you is priceless.
A couple posts back was the start of the wheel well repair. Here is the rest. I made a quick guide for my plasma cutter out of scrap sheet metal to cut the donor parts off of a scrap body. This would make sure that the cuts would be identical. Piece of scrap sheet metal and a hose clamp make a quick and dirty guide The old and replacement part. Its hard to see how deep the dent on the old one is. Cut out and ready to replace. Replacement part welded in. Just like new!
Filled in the gas filler tube opening. Probably going to run saddle tanks of the polished aluminum variety.
I had two grilles for this truck. I was going to run both at different times to see if anyone noticed. In a very weak moment some guy in Round Rock TX made me an offer on the oval grille that I could not refuse. Oh well, cash for parts in the bank.
I am running a Dodge****mins with a six speed manual in my project. Motor will be behind the cab as I need the legroom inside. If anyone has any tips or pictures for remote shifter setup, I could use some help. This is the motor mount that I fabbed
Got the cab in position and making cab mounts this week. I had bought a sleeper that was going to go on top of the motor but after some measuring I would have had to chop it a foot and narrow it a foot. Seemed like a lot of work and it was not going to be exactly what I wanted so the sleeper got sold and out came the sketchbook again.
During Covid when kids were locked out of school the grandson and I managed to build this during “shop class” in grade 3. He thinks he should drive it to school every day
I lost my oldest grandson to cancer 2 years ago in August. It was by far the most painful and helpless that I've ever felt. All one can do is put one foot in front of the other (repeatedly) until the birds start to sing again. Being back to work on your project is a good step forward. As far as your shifter, have you looked at the cable shifters from fwd cars. They aren't good for bang shifting, but you aren't building a dragster.
that's freakin awesome that you have the grandson wrenching!!!!!!! What Steve said... our 2015 VW Golf TDI is a cable shifted 6 speed stick.
It’s all good my friend , hang in there . Glad to see you working on the COE . Is that the same grandson that went camping with you in the teardrop ?
Barry it’s really great to see you back. I’m so sorry to hear about you losses. You never know what’s around the corner. I wish you all the best for the future And with the build of you’re truck. Every time I look at the rear window in my truck I think of you, and shipping it over to me. To go from this To this All the best Barry.
OK, I am in a little bit of a pickle today. I bought new seats, new to me, Nissan Altima buckets. Problem I have is that I am 6 foot tall and the cab of this truck is made for midgets. Are we still allowed to say that? I am now looking at cutting the entire firewall out or the back of the cab. Rick, do you have any pics of your interior showing seat placement? Shopdawg, I don't remember your truck being really tight when I rode in it. Do you have pics of your setup? Did you cut the firewall?
I think this is a pretty common problem. Old fashioned seat backs weren't nearly as thick. I added a sleeper which allowed me to set the seats further back from the dash.
