Running a 54 olds slant pan on the street. problem is shifting from low to second always smooth then shifting to third it hits so hard it rocks your socks then to high smooth. Only time it does not slam third is if you are in it hard. Any help to smooth out third shift appreciated. Using solid rod connection from pan to carbs.
Remembering the last time I worked on a slant pan dual range, I think that 3rd band had its own adjustment, inside the pan... There was a steel 'block' between the nose of the servo that was of interest, but the last one for me was in 1958? '59? If you know someone with a MOTORS manual, I'd rather look in there over 'Chilton'.
The 2-3 shift in a hydro is delicate to time. That shift changes setting on both bands and both forward clutch packs. You need to adjust both bands to factory specs.
Had the same thing happen especially in stop and go traffic. If I let off while in 2nd it would slam into 3rd. Pretty much learned to manual shift it when in traffic.
Thank everyone for your help, here on the east coast no one can help much. Gent that rebuilt trans has pass and don't know anyone with tools to make changes. thanks
Start watching evil-bay for the band adjustment tools, they do show up for sale occasionally. Also find a manual for the hydro; and old Motors Manuals had a lot of info. regarding these things. Rebuilt my first hydro using an early 50's Motors Manual...
I run a '54 Willys hydro (Really!) flat pan in my Willys coupe. I modified it by adding 4 planet carriers, more clutches and made a B&M style first gear lock valve, shimmed the pressure regulator spring, etc. I adjusted my bands using the external screws according to the directions in Chilton's, had no access to the internal adjusting tools, and my******* has shifted very smoothly for the past 40 or so years of rod runs.
