After a long hiatus of being without a oldie moldie car (my last was a 69 LTD), this past weekend I am back on some old 4 wheels. I traveled to Georgia with a friend of mine and picked up a sweet, all-original 1960 Impala with a 283 V8, 2bbl Rochester, 2 spd Powerglide Transmission. I plan on slowly restoring it but as it is right now...I drove it from Georgia and have driven it everyday since so it's strong for the time being. Now I'll be the first to admit I don't know a ton about cars except some basics. I've always been a motorcycle guy when it comes to engines. I'll probably be asking a lot of questions and looking for ideas. Some may sound stupid but hey, I'm learning. Tentatively planned: clean up the engine compartment, new valve covers and aircleaner, upgrade the braking system, new wiper motor and probably upgrade to a 4bbl carb. Originally it's white so I'll repaint it pearl white maybe with some ghost flames and an turquoise accent strip off the rocket (as money will allow). Slowly restore the interior (it's turquoise as well) but it's not in terrible condition...it's just 44 years old. Mechanics are first...cosmetics are last. Titling and registering the beast has made me feel like a dancing chicken since Indiana requires all vehicles to have titles and Georgia doesn't on anything pre-63. I'm close to having it done though.....after multiple calls to GA & IN DMVs as well as the previous owner. I fully plan on being at the GoodGuys show in Indy on the 12th and I'll be sure to post pictures soon of my new baby.
alright, these were taken just before I took possession. I'm working on cleaning up the engine right now (in 44 years I don't think it's been degreased) and going to tune her up. I got new spark plugs and going to see what wires to get for it. Also shopping for parts here and there (fender skirts, oil cap, and a few odds and ends). I think when it's all said and done...it'll nearly be a new engine. (I'd REALLY like to put a 327 in there). I'm just outside Indy (which will make my transit to the GoodGuys show and to see Rev. Horton Heat very minimal) Here's a couple pics to satisfy those who love the Impalas. I'll have newer pics hopefully by the weekend's end.
