I must admit I don't like the colourisation, as its so poor, would be better off just doing the stabilsation and ffs adjustments etc and not the colour. And yes, quite clearly jumps between two very different time periods, just after you see a USN sailer and a Soldier or airman walking away from camera, and next shot of cable car on turnatable onwards is a decade earlier at least, I'd day pre-1953/4 looking at the cars and fashions. Love the little cable car tractor unit with the guy sitting under the big sun shade umbrella Nitpicking aside, great to see these old tourist films being transferred for others to see a long lost world.
Streetcar number 503 appears in both parts, at 2:50 with a 58 Chevy passing it and 4:00 with the earlier cars. Same route, different ads.
Family outing to buy school clothes. Early 50's. Aquatic Park was where the Ghiardelli chocolate factory was. Also the Sea Scout Base (SSS129) Friends father was an electrician at the Cable Car Barn.
As a prank, teenagers would run behind the electric buses, and pull down on the spring loaded ropes dis-engaging the power source causing bus to stop. The bus drivers were not happy about that.
Hello, San Francisco is our second favorite stopping place for our coastal drive vacations. We must have had some idea about the “city by the bay.” We lived in a small city down South and never saw such hills within a downtown area. And the coastal curves + cliff drives were amazing for us little kids. But, as many times our dad took us there on our family vacations, my wife and I started our San Francisco journeys in our college days, through our "single" days, family days, and the last one was in 2018. (old folks days, but love driving versus jets) Next to the city bus, is almost a matching color lowered fastback sedan sitting by the side of the hill. If one compares the lowered height to the rest of the “stock” cars, their is a custom car in the neighborhood. The colorization makes the fastback sedan stand out. No, our dad had a 1941 Buick Fastback sedan as his first family used car that made the long drive from Northern California down to Long Beach, Eastside in 1946. It just stood out... Jnaki But, this caught my eye as I watched the film. Hilo Hattie… what a memory !!! Hilo Hattie (born Clarissa Haili, October 28, 1901 – December 12, 1979) was a Hawaiian singer, hula dancer, actress and comedienne of Native Hawaiian ancestry. In 1940, Clara legally took the name Hilo Hattie at the insistence of Harry Owens during the 1941 filming of Song of the Islands (1942). In 1949, Clara also appeared regularly on Owens' television show and in a number of variety shows, plus several non-musical stints on Hawaii Five-O (1968). But, to be in San Francisco??? At the world famous St. Francis Hotel? In more recent times, our last stay in San Francisco was two blocks away, (Cornell Hotel de France )but, miles away as a comparison in build, accommodations and notoriety. YRMV
The old ones can shift one lane in either direction. The current ones can shift two lanes, for a short distance, and have battery and capacitor backup. Those can drive for over mile while disconnected completely. This facilitates detours, line repairs, service outages, and reallocation of resources to meet demand.
Had forgotten. Same friends dad took his 54 Chevy, 4 door to work and had the shop paint it Muni green and yellow.
