is there a way to do a frontend alignment without specialized equipment? i picked up a '56 caddy that has had the front suspension rebuilt but has not been aligned.

i have the specs but not sure how to get a measurement on the caster/camber angles.

anybody have a technique for getting it close?

    thanks

You could hold a string and some leadweight against the top of the rim to the bottomside to roughly check the camber, and toe-in can be set somewhat with a stick or rope between the insides of the front tires.
You can't really set caster without suitable tools though.

You can usually get close on toe by measuring the distance between the tires front and rear, as close to half way up the tire as possible.
I get close on the camber by cutting a board that just sits inside the rim edge on the wheel (you'll probably need to cut a notch in the center for the hub) and then set an angle finder against it.
Caster is a little more tricky, and I usually don't mess with that. I only do this as a temporary alignment so I can drive the car to an alignment shop.
