The cams ride in the head/caps........no bearings. ToddB..........My mechanical abilities are good, but NO experience in rebuilding engines, and a modular motor isn't a place to start. I wouldn't buy a used engine in that sense, too many unknowns, that's why I'm looking for a running donor car. A remanufactured engine as a go-to backup plan if I can't find a suitable donor car. I'm 72.....too old to be doing this more than I have to
Have you used this search list,it does a State wide search http://zoomthelist.com/index.php?q=Lincoln+MK+VIII&state-search-all=ALL&date-range=ALL&u=Search
You've been busy again, thanks. I couldn't sleep if I turned either of those two into parts cars, but yes that's the vintage. Ford never made a better all around vehicle imho. Those are really cheap prices for being so lo miles and clean. Makes me want to buy one if I had the $ for a DD! The insurance auto auction one I'm waiting to be released would have been in the same category as those two, except the one I'm watching has major colision damage. I'm anticipating my costs on that one to be 1500-2k after bid, fees, taxes, and transport to Amarillo. And I won't have to feel guilty about turning a future cl***ic into a parts car. With that said, I think my searching may be over. A few years ago I sold my plastic mock up block and gutted ****** to a 57 forum member who was getting ready to put the 4.6 drivetrain in his '57. He bought a complete drivetrain out of a 55k '93 Mark VIII for the swap. He called me yesterday to tell me he has decided that probably wasn't going to ever happen (too many projects) and if I wanted it he'd not only sell it to me, but he'd take a long weekend and deliver it to Amarillo, which would be a 900 mile round trip. It includes engine, ******, driveshaft, computer, gas tank (not sure why except maybe for the in tank fuel pump),wiring harness, shifter, etc etc. I can't remember if he mentioned cooling fans. He also bought a 94 Mark VIII drivetrain from a friends car. Mileage unknown, apparently had digital dash issues. He bought that drivetrain for another project, and has all the components as with the '93 I listed. He wants to sell everything, both drivetrains, as a one lot. Needs the space. He's in no hurry if I decide to wait and see on the auction car. His price, with delivery, would put it about the same as what I'm anticipating the auction car to cost me when all said and done. Lots to think about and decide on, but in an odd twist of fate, I may have a complete 4.6 dohc setup for sale shortly, lol.
Seems like things are turning around for you. Put the feelers out and keep an ear open, it usually will pay off. The delivery is the icing on the cake.
Saw this on Market Place Jesse Combs CrownVic subframe swap page on Monday 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII ZIP CODE 95966 $1,200 Motor runs great, body not good, 57000 original miles, 4.6 DOHC motor, no rear end. 1200.00 OBO
Sure wish that one was 1000 miles closer so I could go check it out. No rear end, plus distance sure makes transporting it to Texas a problem. My friend in Kansas, with the two drivetrains, corrected me on something I didn't hear correctly (my hearing really ****s).......I thought he said he didn't hear that 2nd (94) engine run before his friend pulled it from the car. What he actually said was it was NOT running before his friend pulled it. Total unknown, should not be considered anything more than a parts engine. Kinda puts a different light on the deal, as I wouldn't have a second drivetrain I would feel comfortable trying to sell. I haven't given up on the deal though, but I have to look at it as paying 2k for an engine we're both ***uming is good, but don't know positevely. The low miles one, he didn't hear run either (I knew that), as it was pulled from the Mark just before he got there. He was just told it was a good running engine, so he bought the whole shebang. It's actually a better deal for someone starting a project, as he has everything, and all I need is the engine. The auction car hasn't been released yet.
A rebuilt is totally out the window, not only does AER not remanufacture them any more, neither does ATK. That puts Jegs, and all the parts stores in the not available cl***........I don't believe the Jeg's 5 week quote any more. So, for the time being, I'm down to my two previous choices. Hoping to find something a lot closer like what DrDragon posted.
You could have your blowed up engine rebuilt in stages. Have the short block done, then the heads. Save up for gaskets & other items that will bleed you dry.
I know just about enough about them to know I don't want to mess with it that way. I'm waiting for a response from the auction place in OKC (sent email to manager). I realized from the dates on the pics, that car was photographed there on 01/02/2019. Normally only takes 2 or 3 weeks. That's almost 3 months. I'm hoping he will let me go there to check it out while I'm waiting for it to be released, and before I spend 200. to join the auction company as a buyer. Car show in Lubbock tomorrow. There will be lots of guys there I know to get the word out. A friend told me a Mark VIII by his house hasn't moved in quite a while...gonna go check that out. At this point, I'm leaning heavily to my friend's stuff I'm wanting to decide in the next few weeks.
I for one will keep my eyes crossed for you (fingers)on that okc one.I am pretty sure with what you accomplished in that build you could handle the rebuild if it comes to that.
Got a lead on another donor car. A friend told me about a Mark VIII near his house that hasn't moved for quite a while. I went there today and talked to the guy who rents the house. The car belonged to the late house owner, and then his son who at one time lived with the guy I was talking to, gave them the ***le and told them to get rid of it. The guy I talked to said it ran real good, the reason they stopped driving it was the airbag suspension is bad. He did not remember what the mileage was on the car, he thought around 100k. They were getting ready to call a salvage yard. I can obviously get it cheap. He's going to find the key and hook up a battery to it so they can check the digital odometer and call me. I've got my fingers crossed that it is less than 100k. Tomorrow is the West Texas Roundup at Cook's Garage in Lubbock, Tx. There will be lots of Amarillo guys there I know, and a few from Lubbock I know as well, so a good chance to ask around.
See if the car runs well. Those cars went many miles and it was the same engine used in police cars and taxis.
I got 255,000 on my daily driven 5.4. No issues and only looses about 1 quart of oil between oil changes. One with 100,000 on it should be fine. I would change the timing chains and tensioners though.
Can't get the guy to call me. I went by the house today, the lady that answered said "I'll go wake him", then came back and said "he's not home". I did look for an oil change sticker and it had one at 102k miles (but no date).
It does, sorta. It's a front wheel drive version. Not sure what the block differences are, but a trusted retired Ford guy told me they were useless for our purposes.
Unless it was the rare Marauder, I believe hers was a probably sohc?? The sohc had about 60 HP less than the dohc. I did go back to the house yesterday where the Mark VIII is and talked to 3 more of the guys who live there. Nice bunch of young kids. They have not been able to locate the key or ***le yet. It is a 98, btw, so will need to convert it from obd II to obd I. If I don't hear anything, or find something else, by this weekend, I'm gonna go with the drivetrains in Kansas. If they do find the key later, I may buy it anyways......a coilover conversion kit would make that a driver again. Replacement air struts are 300 each.
Today has started out really really good. I was checking the insurance auto auction site again, when I noticed they also had a used parts division, so I did a search. Came up with a '95 Lincoln Mark VIII engine with only 33k miles! I called and it was still available. Price was good at 884., shipping from Ohio was great at 185! I jumped on it. They've confirmed the order, will let me know when it ships. They did include the vin number, so I can verify it's what they actually send.
I'm still struggling to get the old one out, and I just found out my engine hoist doesn't have enough reach with the front sheetmetal still on. I'll work on that problem today. There's no way I'm pulling the front clip off this car. If worse comes to worse, I'll have my buddy at the speed shop put the new one in......he's go an overhead trolley. As far as getting the old one out, I can take it out in pieces if I have to, or find a cherry picker with a longer reach. So, driving this summer? Maybe by June with the stuff I want to redo while the engine is out.
if you have a big old tree nearby pull it the old way a chain fall and a branch at right heighthopefully everything works out.
I went and checked out the cherry picker my neighbor has.........collapsed, his is the same as mine fully extended! His will get the job done. I think I'll put mine in the back yard with a bird feeder hanging from it.
