"good to hear the sun is finally shining for you texas..... a bit of patience and a lot of luck" Yes, it was good day today...found the engine, got my engine hoist problems resolved, got set up to take some engine parts to the powder coater's tommorrow, with a promise of about a week as he has the color I need in stock, we got our tax return today.....only took a week for that!, and got an unexpected check from the mortgage company for 820. for over payment of 2018 property taxes/escrow account. I could use a few more days like this.
Can't believe it's only been a week since my last post..seems like a month. short version: I got totally scammed on the engine I ordered, but I do think the broker is going to maintain their customer support on it. It is boxed up and waiting for a return pickup. Not the broker's fault......they confirmed the 33k engine was still available when I placed the order, but what I got from the salvage yard in Ohio was a stripped down long block that looked high mileage and untouched for years. Masking tape over the intake ports (yes, they even pulled the intake manifold) was dried up and falling off. The vin number on the packing slip was different than the one in the ad, and running a vehicle check on that vin number showed a salvage ***le in Texas 7 years ago, with NO mileage reports anywhere throughout it's history, including at the time of salvage. No arguement from the broker, they side with me on not getting what I ordered, but that was Tuesday, and the engine has not been picked up yet. I'll get a refund "when the engine is received back at the shipper's. Found a new supplier, got one on the way as of this afternoon. Top notch supplier, more on them later.
"later" has arrived already, lol. The new place I found is www.engineworld.com They bill themselves as the world's largest supplier of used engines and transmisions. Not hard to believe if you check out their website. They do not deal with high mileage engines. Japanese European, etc engines have a max of 50k miles, and domestic engines a max of 80k. After you order an engine, they pull it from their warehouse, clean and detail it, run video taped compression tests and oil pressure check and take still pics of any requested areas. If it p***es all the tests, they then email the videos, pics, and test results for you approval before they run the credit card and pack for shipping. All of this is done in a matter of hours. I've got a really nice looking 94 engine on it's way from them. There was one glitch along the way though. From their warehouse, they had originally pulled a 4.6 dohc engine for a Continental...........won't work, it's front wheel drive. I noticed that in the first set of info they sent, and they got that straightened out after a few phone calls, and pulled the second engine from their warehouse, this time correct. Sure glad I caught it, they look alot alike from the pics which did not include the backside of the engine. Test results from the second engine were very good as well, and cosmetically looked even better.
I have a local guy that does a lot of engine replacements, my buddy used him 2x and the installs looked factory. I'd be curious where his stock comes from.
hopefully for your sake things start going your way.just curious why the front drive would not work not familiar with modern cars.motor mounted side to side? not front to back?you said the 4.6 one offered was front drive wonder how they would not have known as I said curious
The bellhousing is part of the ******. The flywheel on the mounted sideways front wheel drive version is much smaller as is the (transfer case?)housing. I don't know that much about front wheel drive systems.A rear wheel drive ****** will not bolt up to it, so yes, different block externally. As to how that happened? warehouse help/forklift driver vs those that know, and I don't know how much info the guy doing the compression test has pertaining to what was ordered. compression test is a simple operation that they could teach to someone off the streets very quickly. I would suspect that this kind of 'event' is a rarity there. Companies don't get that big run half***ed.
I guess there comes a time in every man's life when he's just got to give up his stubbornness and admit there are things he just can't do any more. I'm going to have to get someone to finish up the engine pull/reinstall. I can do the detail / finishing up work, but my body is not cooperating on this part of it. I'm going to have to separate the engine and ****** to get the engine out without pulling the front clip. The starter is still in the car, and I gashed a knucle open last night trying to get to those bolts, so now my left hand is almost useless. lol I need a roadtrip.
if you look around at the people in this hobby you will find that most of them are either bald or grey haired ....i am both haha....it is something we are all facing up to (reluctantly) just a fact of life. do as much as you can and farm out what you can't do yourself.....it's a ****** when your mind is still 20 but your your body laughs at you.....just gotta work smarter
"if you do nothing...you achieve nothing" exactly.........went back out Saturday afternoon, found the towel I 'threw in' Friday, picked it up and got to work. The engine got pulled out Sunday morning, after separating it from the ******. The replacement is being delivered tomorrow, but I've got a week or two work before I start putting that in.
Sometimes you have to put on your game face & dive into something you dread (other than going to work..). About a year ago it was my busted 4-speed. Which ran 10 days from break to having it ****oned up again. Set yourself small goals for each day you work on it.
Yep, lots of small goals, have no other choice, lol. I've got to give huge kuddos to Parts Market. They are the broker/ company I bought my first engine from that got returned. I called them this afternoon, and the lady I spoke with had just finished putting in for the refund. They are not only not charging me for return shipping as their sales agreement specifically states, but they are not even charging me for the original shipping, so a full refund. That's one company that you can believe is customer service priority. They obviously agreed with me that the salvage yard in Ohio was attempting an out an out scam.
yeah, I had very little paperwork that showed their name and address. I'll see if I can find it. I'll pm you the info.
So, let's take a poll. don't know how to set that up. SCAM or HONEST MISTAKE?: I see an ad for a '95 engine with 33k miles. It references a VIN #. I do a vehicle history report. It shows only one ***le change in Ohio in '14 referencing 27k miles, confirming the possible low miles. A call is made to check availability on that specific engine, and was told "that engine is still available", so it was purchased. It should be noted on the history report, there were NO negatives such as flood, collision, salvage, etc. What I got was an engine that had been pulled and stripped long enough ago that the masking tape used to seal intake ports was dried up and deteriorating. The alum block had lots of that white corrosion alum. gets. The packing slip referenced a different vin number. A vehicle history report on that vin # showed a 95 MK VIII that had a salvage ***le issued in 2012. No references to mileage anywhere in the report, including with the salvage ***le. A call to the salvage yard got a response of "it was the only one we had, so it must have been the right one. That, to me, didn't explain the 2 vin #'s, and I'm wondering if there's a way of seeing if the car with the low miles VIN # is still on the road. What do you guys think, Scam or honest mistake.
I wouldn't either. They probably were not intentionally trying to scam you but so inept to do they job properly that they really had no care in the world what you got. Or they figured "who's going to pay to send it back" and figured you would settle with it. Pretty standard customer service now a days. I'm glad it worked out for you.
Scam? Hard to say, but poor business practice is a definite. They probably count on not having it sent back. Good thing you used the broker. I would not buy from them for sure.
