Unfortunately I take pretty much everything apart and clean it anymore. New doesn't mean ready to go. I think you are correct in in the wet flow theory. Mine had a residue similar to SafteyKleen in it when I took it apart. And the debris in it seemed to have a wet flow pattern.
I had the carb apart to change the jets, took off the baseplate also to clean the Lock***e **** from the vacuum port tubes pressed into the base..I didn't see any flashing or foreign stuff inside.BUT..I had a Holley that acted similar.I pulled the top plugs on the primary metering block, removed the emulsion tubes and found dirt.So maybe this carb metering block has something in there also. The float levels were ok out of the box, raising the primary level a little made no difference.Fuel pressure is 5.5 psi controled by a regulator with a gauge. Again, the engine runs ****ty at part throttle,it acts lean, press very lightly on the accelerator and it doesn't respond properly.Press down a little more, the vacuum goes down, the power valve open and it takes off.In normal part throttle driving when ya lightly press the gas to increase speed, the accelerator pump and power circuit don't really do anything ,the mixture in this case is metered by the main jets and if the RPM is low,the off idle fuel circuit. I'll call Barry Grant tech line and see what they think before I start messing with it,it does have a guarantee. On the Demon carb being traditional? it's a carb much like the original Holley thay came out in 1957. The Edelbrock is similar to the AFB that also appeared in the late 1950's.The vehicle is a 64 El Camino that just squeezes in here.So all is traditional ,right?
I've used all of the above. Had problems with alll of the above at one time or another out of the box. The last four builds have gotten BG's but not before a tear down prior to install. Always seem to find something just not right. BG tech have always been helpful to me. I always call them direct on a new build and give them all my specific specs and they will direct me to the proper carb. Just my two cents.
The main jets do not come in until about 3000 rpms so the power valve and transfer slots are contributing well before this occurs. Typically the only reason to go up on the main jet is for a lean wot.
Based on your pm it sounds more like tuning issues as opposed to a "bad" carb as you have posted. You have a reply to your pm with some suggestions to try for the initial set up.
Probably the best ones we get are where the guy has bolted the carburetor on the motor backwards and is insistant that it was designed wrong. I had one guy argue for over 30 minutes with me personally before he realized it and one of the other guys had a similar call the other day.
We are aware that there were problems awhile back with the tech department which is why Barry cleaned house about a year and a half ago. I can tell you as of then that all emails are answered in a timely manner as well as calls returned to customers and infact now I see lots of people complaining about other companies tech departments not getting back to them but you do not see that about ours. We are also one of the few that are here on the boards trying to help everyone as well. In regards to your carburetor that you had the nitrous backfire the amount of money that you would have in it is not really a fault of ours as you admit to having this occur. The carburetor can be rebuilt but without looking at it would be hard to say how much since it did have the nitrous backfire. A standard rebuild starts at 225.00 plus the shipping and then any hard parts needed are added to that. If the metering blocks or baseplate was damaged then those parts would be extra.
It should also be noted that the shavings was a past issue which was addressed about a year ago and you should not have to take the curent models apart to find this stuff. We made quite a number of changes in the way they were machined as well as the way parts were being carried and stored. A timed sonic cleaner was also added for the metering blocks and since that time the warranty claims we see for debris has dwindled to next to nothing. The majority of times I see someone posting about metal the instance typically occured 2 years ago or longer. Hope this helps.
I haven't used a BG carb, but I am very impressed with your posting here and at least, be willing to address issues in the open. So many problems, and bad reps, could be overcome just by having someone on the selling end take the time to indicate their company gives a damn after selling the product.
Thanks, we try to be and listen to what everyone has to say. We actually monitor about 400 different boards but there are just a few of those we stay on pretty regular with this being one of them as several of us have HAMB friendly cars
Thanks, a lot of times you will see more posted about us because the guys know we are present on the boards and try to help whenever possible whereas the other manufacturers are not. In regards to past issues we really see no need to try and cover them up so admitting to them and telling what was done to help correct them works best for us. Sometimes stuff does get by us but we are constantly looking at the QC end of things to try and offer a better product.
The BG Tech Guy responded to my PM and posted here.I'll go back to the stock main jets, plug the distributor vacuum advance into the full vacuum port and go from there.
Good luck. Let us know how it all works out. This was a weird thread... having Truckedup and Trucked Up posting on the same thread multiple times. I was wondering why the avatar kept disappearing!
Haha... yeah try reading it in the thread and in pm's , I had to go back and do a double take on it as well.
I hope BG is straightened out for their sake. I really don't care myself. I e-mailed BG tech ( 3 times ) maybe a year ago looking for some suggestions on blower carbs , fuel lines and/ or linkage for a 350 with a 671 Dyers huffer on it. No reply not one. O.K. then, I'll call waited forever but hung in, was finially told by some BG tech dude to contact Summit or Jegs they could help me better. O.K. another life lesson learned = Never call or buy BG again.
That would have had to been a lot longer then that as we closed Summits account over 4 years ago so we would not be sending them any referals. We do not sell direct so you may have been forwarded to a dealer but not having been privy to the original conversation don't know what the other side of the conversation actually was. I have been answering all of the emails myself since Oct of 06 and if it was received ,it got an answer. If it was sent to the wrong box or went to spam could be another story unless it was prior to the date mentioned. We also have emails kicked back that we answer as well because of the senders spam blocks.
to be fair this was years ago, I bought the carb new in 2001 and used it for 5 months. I was never claiming warranty just wanted (at the time) to know what It would cost to rebuild it myself or send it down to rebuild it. but due to all the phone & email problems I just gave up. I no longer have the car that it was on so the carb just sits in it's original box with it's manual & instruction video. and yes it's not your fault that I paid $695.00 for it from the local speed shop but thats still a chunk of change by anyone standards be it 2001 or especially today, so dumping another $200 + just didn't seem feesable when I was able to solve the problem with a Nickerson prepped 750 carb for $450. it's all water under the bridge now I am glad to see the responses from you on here atleast it seems like they're (BG) taking the buisness more seriously then they did years back, unfortunatly your left with trying to clean up the mess from prior mis-informed or un-trained techs? Paul
Not a problem and if you do change your mind and decide to send it in just send me a pm or an email and we'll be glad to take a look at it. Used Demons will actually bring pretty good money on Ebay as well should you decide to turn it into some cash.
No way the motor was only put together last March. All I was looking for was some suggestions and info. I had no problem buying from distributors and not direct. Just wanted some info. I do really give you credit for trying to get things back on track at BG but I'll spend my money someplace else. Good luck in your venture, I hope it works out.
After a few PM's with the BG Tech guy here and trying some tricks that didn't really work on my carb,he told me to send the carb to him at Barry Grant. He says they will check it out for faults and if necessary make mixture calibration changes to suit my situation. I'm pleased that this tech man is taking charge of the problem, thanks. I've had a few tuning issues with performance products in the past and never got satisfaction from tech depatments.I always got the typical answers from guys who seemed to busy to sit down and give it some real thought. I'm looking foward to some satisfaction this time
