i actually got pricing for it to be repaired by reputable builder for a lot more than the 1000 bucks , PP told me to send them a inflated quote that we could settle on what was right, they were cool the whole way right up until they offered the 71.00 , i am sure they have thousands of happy customers, that still does not make it right , they had an adjuster come to the house and put a value on the damage , he came up with 2600.00 that was with out any input from me , i just wanted to get paid for the damaged parts so i could replace them, thanks again for all the input pro or con

I found Performance Plus to be pretty professional during the phone call I made to them pretending I had a motor to ship to find out how they handled the insurance aspect. The guy was very professional, explained everything to me, asked how it was going to be packed and loaded, and he followed up with an email quote thanking me for coming to them.

I felt bad playing a game on them like that but didn't want to come right out and say "there is a thread on some forum about your insurance, how does it work?, because I might not have gotten the same answer. When I sent them back an email telling them the deal fell through they responded with another email thanking me anyway and asking me to keep them in mind for any future business.

All of that was done promptly and pretty professionally IMO. I suspect your engine wasn't secured very well to the pallet. I shipped a 454 to a friend in Michigan a couple of years ago and I took the time to not only palletize it, but I built a wooden crate around it for protection and strapped it down tightly. It arrived without a scratch.

Thanks for the reply Performance Plus.

    Couple of points;

You as the "service provider" should be confirming with your "chosen carriers" that they not accept any items that are not properly packaged by the customer. Even the post office is real anal about not accepting simple boxed parcels that are not properly taped, etc. Nope. Retape it and get back in line.

"Although the liability is that of the carrier, we as the service provider still do everything that we can to assist in initiating any damage claims that may occur and facilitate the process along the way"

Can you help your cutomer here or is he SOL because he didn't pay extra for insurance? There has to be a compromise between $71 and $1000-even w/o edded insurance.

As one member mentioned "Why do we have to pay extra to insure the parcel"?
This has always been a pet peeve of mine with the shipping industry. After hiring/paying someone to ship something for me for an agreed, contracted price, I have to tack on additional "insurance" $$$ to ensure it gets to me in one piece, or gets to me at all without "getting lost". The carrier is actually asking me to pay them bonus money to do their job right. If I "waive" insurance and the carrier loses or damage the parcel, I'm SOL and the carrier is off the hook for a poorly done job, all with the reply of "you should have added insurance" (and our problem would be our problem rather than yours).

If the shipper damages the parcel or loses it, it's malpractice. That's a screw up in any other line of work. For some reason, it seems to only be the shipping industry. Imagine paying $25 for a steak and having the waiter ask "would you like to pay $3 more to make sure we cook it right or don't lose the meal all together on its way from the kitchen to your table"?

Why do us consumers put up with this from the shipping industry including USPS, Fedex, UPS??? Yeah, its a rant, but a legit one.

  5. I am curious as to what the HAMB seller/shipper has to say as to his packing abilities, and just who PP contracted to do the shipping....heres hoping the adjuster comes thru for you

Who made the arrangements to ship the engine? If the seller set up the shipper and told you how much to pay, he may be liable. He promised you a product in the condition you bought it. I did not read every word in this thread so I may have missed this point.

  7. Anytime you use a Broker to facilitate a service,
you run the risk of being less than satisfied.

One of the many advantages of being a HAMBer
    is having choices ..... ;)

There is a Social Relay Group here:

You can post under the ' Wanted ' section of the classifieds.

You can do a keyword search here using ' transport ' or
' haul ' or ' relay ' to see what is available.

Most damage to autos and freight occurs during transfer.

Avoid transfer - ship direct with someone who cares about
your engine as much as you do ....

Plenty of folks here who can help you out,
you just need to do some looking .... :D

I was thinking of buying this engine so i called PP for a quote so i could figure that in to the price , once i bought the engine the shipping price went up , partially due to the fact that the seller didnt have the fork lift that he said he would have to load it, i will post some pictures so you can see the damage , as far as the way it was packaged it obliously could have been better ,but it was loaded onto the truck without any incident and the damage occurred after that so it was mishandled at some point it didn't just fall off the pallet and start rolling around in the truck , at some point a forklift driver had to have mishandled it , as far as PP being professional i would agree, but they still need to make this right

I had my intro into the freight game when I bought my heap last December. Put it on Uship.com for bid and got emails and calls from brokers for months afterward. Sounded like some of them were not even in the USA! The few actual truck owners/drivers I spoke to said the brokers were just finding spots on empty rigs crossing the county, my car could have been loaded and unloaded 50 times between Florida and California depending on which trucker would move it a bit west for the least amount of money. I'm sure there are specialty brokers who scrutinize who they choose but finding the right one in the sea offers I got and the disconnection between me and the guy in the truck worried me too much so I went with one who actually owned and drove the truck.
