Bad english and no intro's

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Stevie G, May 30, 2004.

  1. So, is it a generally accepted consensus that we are ignoring posts with piss poor English / one long, run-on sentence and any semblance of an intro?

    Uh..........thought so.

    Okay....back to tech week.
I need to get to the shop and contribute something.

yes there is some really bad english here along with grammar, sentence structure, etc, etc. i'm not complaining but it's hard to understand some posts once in awhile, you know the kind where you have to read it 2-3 times.

why do people get angry if people post without doing an intro? i don't see what the reasoning in getting upset over it. personally, i think the "rule" is dumb, but that's just me.

So you should know then that sentences start with a CAPTITAL letter and when you're talking about yourself, i.e. "i", it's spelt with a CAPITAL too. [IMG]

Apart from that, top marks for spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.

LOL...don't get me started. I teach high school english. Some posts I see on the web (and hell, some professional sites!) just make me twitch in pain. Luckily, when I'm on places like the HAMB, I'm off duty unless there's some painfully glaring error.

I know we're not all English majors and I can over look some misspelled words now and then (perhaps just a lack of education, or in my case a lousy typist) but I really have a hard time with the run-on sentences. Yes, a capitol letter beginning each sentence would be helpful also. My biggest suggestion would be to proof read your posts or replies. A very wise man that I had the pleasure of working for use to say "it only takes a minute longer to do it right".
As far as an intro, I think that's just plain polite.
Actually, I think this turned into a tech post.

Lot of people here have eanglish as their second language. pretty hard to fault them, lets see you type out a full post in german/french/whatever else completely without grammatical/spelling errors.

Now those that just dont even attempt to try to get it right, thats another story.

I don't need a spellchec. I need a proof reader, sometimes i cringe when I re-read my own posts, and it's to late to edit. I sure as hell am not going to complain about others. as long as the tech part is right on i don't give a***** about the write on. so get off your high horse.
A good friend was a high school teacher. they made him principal I suspect to keep him out of the class room. To this day he is the worst speller that I know (makes me look good) [IMG]

  24. I dont have a major problem with bad spelling etc. I will say though I do tend to read through what Ive written before I post it to make sure it looks ok.

Local dialogue can be a problem sometimes as we are typing as we would speak and not neccesarily in a letter format , but my only gripe is that if you punctuate the same sentence in 2 different ways it can mean 2 completely different things !

Also , the wrong impression can be gained from statements on here with sarcasm in them but theres nothing you can do about that with this particular medium. Until we are all video linked , this wont change !

Basically , if you are intelligent enough to be aware of the bad spellings and grammar errors , you should be clever enough to understand the posting without it being a problem !!

Maybe we should call it, "Writing Right!"

And then, a NEW paragraph once and a while wouldn't hurt either! (sorta like taking a breath!)

NO intros.... they usually get taken care of by the "old timers" flamin'.

    [/ QUOTE ] <font color="green">Correct spelling AND punctuation!!!

And yet you take offense to this post?

    A "Closet TARD" maybe? [IMG]

I don't think anyone on the HAMB is banging on the people with an occasional mis-spell or lack of punctuation.

However, the post that started all of this could only have occurred with the use of voice recognition software by someone born with no tongue and/or lips. [IMG]

    As for the sarcasm angle.

I am one of the most sarcastic people you may ever meet.

I am here to make you laugh, sometimes at your expense.

Please know that I am a lover not a fighter and if you think I am an**** hole on the net, wait until you meet me in person. [IMG]

    It's a cross I must bear.

Oh yeah, liberal use of these things [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] will sometimes help smooth over miscommunications.
