Yes back in the day it was STP and 10 W 40 Valvoline. Now its STP or Lucas and 15W40 shell Rotellatt. I used to laugh at those guys who used a FRANTZ toilet paper aux oil cleaner. I bought one at a auction for $1 and tried it. Im now convinced it does what the manufacturer claimed.
I was taught the use atf on the rings. The same guy taught me to pull the new bearings out of the box and with a shot of wd40, take a grey scotch brite pad and clean them. Then clean them with brake cleaner and ***emble with ***embly lube. He told me the micro scratches helped in lubrication. He also wiped every cylinder out with a white cloth, for one it showed dirt, but it also helps feel any rough spots. Maybe he was crazy, i don't know. But i still use atf on my rings when i build an engine
I have always used pure STP on the cylinder walls, nothing on the pistons other than the 50/50 oil/STP mix I wiped down the ring compressor with inside. Used white grease on the cam, lifters, rods and main bearings, wiped the seals with the 50/50 mix. For oil it was usually Pennzoil 20w40, sometimes I used Havoline 20w40, whichever I had. Never had a problem.
Spent the day with my mom for Christmas, she dug out a box with some of grandpa's stuff. Got this keychain I thought was kinda kool.
As mentioned previously the idea behind dunking the pistons is to lube the wrist pin Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
