Can I mount a ballast resister on the firewall of a car without a hood, or does it need to be out of the elements?

It should be ok out there in the open. Although someone might steal it....

Should be fine. Most are now sealed ceramic units.

Me, I'd put the resistor and coil on the inside of the firewall, keep it clean.
(That's if you're running a Chevy or other motor where the distributor is close to the firewall...)

Mounted mine on inside of firewall. I added a 1/2" spacer to the mounting bolt so the resistor doesn't actually touch the metal.....

I used to mount them on a 1/4 inch piece of aluminum slightly larger that the resister and was always amazed by how warm that chunk of aluminum would get. Don't really know if it did any good but made me feel smarter.
