Ok so trying to get the old model a motor up and running after about 30 years of sitting. While I'm at it I plan to swap some things to make it a little easier to work with. One of them being 12volt. Now I understand 6 volt is just fine and yatta yatta but this is what I want to do. So I have new spark plug wires, new plugs, new cap and rotor, new updated type points. I also have a new coil. Its the A 12000 coil. Ive read if you run a 12 volt coil for 6 volt system you don't need a ballast resistor but if you run a 12 volt coil on 12 volt system you do need one or you should get a 12 volt coil with internal ballast resistor does this sound right? any reason to get the coil with internal resistor over the regular 12v coil and separate resistor? Cheers Mike
You need a ballast resistor on a 12V system IF the coil does not have one internally. All of the parts wires, cap etc. don't care what the voltage is.
Yep.Either one is good.Resistors have different values, just as long a you have one attached will be good enough.
