Ive been scroungin around this guy locals stash he's getting rid of and i wanted to check with the experts on prices and what i need to look out for..and i appreciate the help the main one im diggin is this one...built by a known builder around here...it's been sitting for almost 10 yrs...$1500...the guy turns it and oils it...59ab standard bore?....offy heads and he's sayin its a chromed offy intake...i aint got the coin but i don't wanna miss out either...it would be smokin in our 27. opinions on worth?
If it has no cracks, all new internals, as it appears to have, the machining is all done. I would say that $1500 is a good price for that if you aren't a friend of his. If you are a friend and it has been sitting for 10 years, he should let you have it for $500 since he obviously isn't gonna use it. Mike
I am building an 8BA. I estimate that I will have about $2K in motor with all of the machine work and the parts. (Fancy aluminum stuff all over it) So $1500, if you can gaurentee that you won't have to tear it all apart to clean it up, isn't a terrible price. I would try to get him to come down, since it doesn't seem that he is going to use it for anything. Do you get all the accessories? Water pumps, carbs, gennie, ...? If not, then I would definately talk him down. That stuff will cost you a bunch more green down the road. TDC
Idon't know what I'm seeing, but it looks like it was not bored far enough to clean up the wear at the top of the cyls???
i'm gonna have in the 3000 ballpark with mine...chrome and polished stuff galore...if it's tip top , i'd say make an offer...that intake doesn't look like chrome, looks like polish
thanks for the info all....def not a friend and ill use all this info for when and if i make an offer. scuse my stupidity but if it aint bored all the way thats pretty serious correct?
At the Nats in St Paul two years ago there was a stock, perfecfectly restored, includin all engine accessories, 50 Merc flathead WITH rebuilt 3 spd and overdrive...just pulled out of a restored car...for $900. I would almost rather buy a motor from a member of an restorers club or antique Ford club, than get one thats been sittin in a shop for years. Just my opinion.
It's standard bore, and they just honed it to re-ring it... that's why it didn't clean up... it SHOULD have been bored, but wasn't.
Well on the con side, you're going to have to tear it down. Those cylinders have excessive wear do to bad wrist pins or rod bushings. It needs to bored with new pistons and rings etc. On the pro side, you've got a nice looking manifold, heads and he keeps it oiled, to make tear down easier. If that's a stock block, that 3-deuce manifold won't work very well. $750 tops
Don't let anyone fool you into paying too much. I realise that sometimes you have to have it and money is no object. But if you wait it out you are likely to find a better deal.
