Looking for some information on some Ford 9" rear drums. I bought a 9" rear from a mid 80's Bronco and tried to use the drums, with 5 on 5-1/2 BC, on my new rear, but the drums were too deep and bottomed out on the backing plates. I tried to have a friend machine 3/16 off the lip, but it didn't work. Since these are truck drums, is there a year/model Ford "CAR" with 5 on 5-1/2 rear drums that would fit? I was thinking Torino, Ranchero, maybe LTD? The drums that came with my new brakes have 4-1/2 and 4-3/4 BC. Or, does anybody know who might sell new ones? That's the only thing holding me up from getting my Coupe back on the road!!! HELP!!! I was on the puter for two hours last night trying to find new ones somewhere.... NAPA? CURRY? Rock Auto?
Can’t tell you why but the 11” drums on my 8.8 have 3 patterns drilled in them. The rear end was from an Explorer and the brakes from a late 80’s F-150. 4-1/2, 5, and 5-1/2.. I’d say you need the correct backing plates for the drum.. sounds lick a mismatch of parts.
OH, IT'S DEFINATELY A MISS MATCH! I don't want to take it all apart. I'm hoping for an easy fix. I'm gonna see if i can just grind off a little today. I can always look for different drums later. Right now i'm just trying to get it back on the road for our Club Car Show on the 21st.
Mid sixty f100 or Bronco drums are a tad over 2 inches of braking surface , I would suspect a mid eighties drum to be 2 1/2 inches or better I think you will find an f100 drum to fit better .
The mul***ude of brake combinations on 9 inchers is more confusing than the pulleys, bellhousings, and such on a SBF.
What size do you need. Distance from the hub face to the backing plate, how wide are the shoes and what dia are you looking for (10",11" or 12")? I can check some of the books I have when I get home.
I agree with @wood remover. I have a rear in an OT vehicle that’s from a 70 f100 and I believe there 2-1/4 x11 shoes. I think I have an old drum around if you come up with dimensions of what you have I can check the one I have to compare.
The stock rear brakes in my 56 Vic were 11” by 1-3/4”. The mid 80’s to 94 F-150 are 11” by 2-1/4” which it is now on the Explorer 8.8 in the car.
What i need is....11" drums, 2-1/4 thick, 5on5-1/2BC. I have the part # for the ones at NAPA. $82ea. He said i can slip then on(NOT BOLT THEM DOWN) and return if they don't work. That's the game plan. They are for a 1965 F 100. I get paid tomorrow so that's the plan.....
so you have a new 9'' axle with dual drilled axle flanges 4.5 and 4 3/4 1. what is diameter of the flange or face 2. what is the hub register or spigot 3. what is the brake offset - bearing to flange/face 2.5'' or shallower 4. what size bearings big or small can you actually drill the flanges 5.5'' pcd
first.....I bought a used rear end from a friend, not new. second...The axles were good, 5on5-1/2. The new brakes I bought, the drums came with the wrong bolt pattern. third...Large bearings finally....It's all together now. Got new drums from NAPA, 1968 F100 drums. Driving it to our ACEScc, HOTROD RESURECTION, in Huntington Beach, tomorrow. With fingers crossed, of course....
