had that happen to me in a 55 Chev years ago (high school). Had driven up to MT to fight forest fires, and tossed the blade almost at the summit above Flathead Lake. Pulled over...it had clipped about 3 tubes, so I just rolled the engine over and worked the opposite blade off (flexing till it broke), then release the cap, and drove into Lakeside. Old feller in some shop down by the lake pinched and soldered the tubes, added some coolant and I was 'good to go'. Ran a bit warmer with only two paddles, but it lasted for three weeks in the hills and then all the way back to Lewiston.

yep, defintiely building a shroud after all these stories!

when I find another Fan, will get that magnafluxed too.

Anyone got an idea what year it was off? just to help me hunt for one.

  3. Had a friend years ago, blade came off a fan on a 427 Chev (in a '78 Trans Am) and it cut clear through the hood (he lived and went on to run a T/F motorcycle). I am running an electric fan ('38 Olds) but only because I can't get a mechanical to fit. I am really leaning towards prepping an OT car for "open track days" at a local road course (Mosport) and I had every intention of running a mechanical ... not any more. Can't see "diving into turn two" and loosing a blade and then coolant.

Sandblasted may be the key word here. It does workharden the metal which can result in cracks.

Had this happen to an OT opel kadet when in college. Leaving school and went to shift from 1st to 2nd when the loudest bang happened and the thing shook so bad it was unbelievable. At first did not know what had happened until I saw the fender well. The blade opened a 2" wide slot through the inner fender panel and then struck the tire. Went back and found it in the road. Cut the opposing blade off (4 blade fan) and ran it like that till I sold it. I have a lot of respect for fan blades.

I had a 4 blade fan almost let go on the way back from a rural rod run. We'd got pretty smashed and were doing donuts in the mud:) all weekend. Anyway yravelling back I heard an almighty s****ing noise from the front of the car, and found one blade was rubbing against the radiator!

    Nearly lost the radiator!

I pulled the fan off, and continued on with my journey home. Made it back without boiling the six!

Grabbed another one out of the pile, checked it for cracks, and as far as I know it's still on the car.

Had the blade come off my yj jeep off roading. Cut through the rad and stuck in the tailgate of my budys s10 that was in front of me. Scared him and me to death.

  8. I've seen a few old 60's a 70's Ford 4 blade solid fans let go. A customer towed his 70's Maverick and the blade had chopped through the main wire harness on the inner apron killing the car instantly. Guess who got the job of splicing it back together!?
