okay - so it sat for awile - wasn't able to turn it over by the crank - maybe that old gasket sealer stuff?...used the strarter - just a bump and it turn...after working it - now I can turn the crank - but it's tight!! .065 pistons - but everyting looks clean - oil getting up to the valve area...Tinkers/Charles cleaned up an extra head for me...thinking about putting it together and firing...sure don't want to mess with the mains or rod bearings...???what's a A newby to do?...ask a friend - hell this isnt a SBC!!!
Turn it over, pull the pan. Check the end thrust, If it moves with a snap thats good. You can pull the rod caps ( just watch the shims.) Plasta gauge them. You can do the same to the mains. Once your sure the bottom end is ok, oil everything well including the cylinders. It should roll over easy without the head. If it feels good, put the head on and run it. You should be good to go.--TV
My flathead 6 was tight after i****embled it. All the bearings were right, and it would turn if i put a big wrench on it, so i just fired it and broke it in. All is still well
is that permatex down the cylinders? if it is id be concerned its in the rings. not a big deal to drop the pan (watchout for falling oilpump) clean the sludge out check for babbit chunks and push the pistons out to clean the sealer out. just dont mix up the cap shims! 12v to the starter will help spin it also
think it is some old pematex - Charles said it was some old gasket stuff - the guy I bought it from said it had run on a stand - the motor is clean around the oil/valve galley area behind the side cover...had run some cleaner thru the cylinders a couple of times after cleaning up...left some Marvel Mystery oil over night - it ran thru...left some 30w in it last night...I'll drop the pan for a look see...might just pull it out...seems to be lossening up the more I play with it...thanks guys...
