Kustomwerks, I wish I was at the BBQ, but I went to a F.A.S.T. chapter speeed meeet Hawkeye Timing's Glen Dyer, Flathead legend Wayne Atkinson, and many unknown Model A fans, put on a speed meet/banger hill climb in Northwood IA. My pal Mitch & his 27 T roadster B powered 5 speed and I with my Heap trailered down to smoke some 16's We got there had a meeting with guest speakers and lunch, drove to the towns airstrip and raced the 1/8 mile. There were only 10 of us running, what a hoot, this year, there were tires spinning at the meet. I will be back after I download & post photos.
Richard Wodnik did many runs, each time he hit it harder and had the longest peelout. I did not hear any of his times or speeds. Yea its a big *** photo
Bill Scarince ate many a V8 with this car, he ran it a few times, it was pullstarted for every run, it went well and sounded great, the old multi disk and A trans kept it from going too fast in the 1/8 mile, boy would it be fun to run on the dirt. anuther big*** photo
Mitch's car gave the best show it would peel out in first, Bark em in 2nd & Chirp in 3rd gear, after that he was at the finnish line. I think his top speed was 56mph in the 1/8th.
When was this and where was it? Very cool. I love the fendered T roadster. Lets see some more pics of the rest of the cars.
Northwood IA, (North east IA by Albert lea MN) Sept 9 2006. Mitch's 27 T roadster, the one with fenders and black w/flames, is running a Dan Price B engine, full pressure, inserts, Thomas head, Zepher intake, dual 97, S10 5 speed and no muffler, Model A frame and rear end, gl*** body, interior done by ***us's babe Jenny Melgard. Mitch spent a ton of time ($) tuning, replacing carbs, distributors, he is very happy with the car now.
Bill's dirt track car has a Cyclone head, REM front mount oil pump for full pressure, B block, Franklin steering, home made header/intake, C Winfield SR with the diaphram blocked off. Bill has raced at many vintage races in MN, FL, TN and other places I do not know of.
that original photo/drawing you posted is Tom Hynes T touring with a S.O. Miller head...the drawing doesnt show but there should be 6 exhaust pipes on the motor i believe....they ground a special cam for in the block to run all 8 vales as exhaust anyone know where a head like that is??? im hunting one!! thanks for the pictures...i wish they had some 4 banger meets near me! Zach
Do you by any chance know who's roadster this is? Interesting use of split wishbones. Are those front wishbones in the rear? Crazy!
Sorry scoot, I did not catch any info on Richards roadster ch***is. He is running engine coolant under the carbs so it is more streetable. Thomas head and intake, B block, a huge old mallory and no muffler.
No worries brotha'! I think I was mostly wondering about the rear wide-fives and how much they were widened. No big deal.
Tim Peterson from WI, Tudor, running parts from Dan Price, Charlie Yapp, Dean Robertson, Phill Andrews and Kong Jackson, Old Mallory & 97. He just could not get things to go as fast as it should have, Dean also took it for a spin down the 1/8.
MAN, that looks like fun! I'm moving to Iowa!, thanks for sharing BTW, you got a high res version of this? I want it as my desktop! thanks
Please don't laugh, here is the photo of my Heap before it's last run, I tried a little "Rubber Gear Change" I think it helped the engine pull more in 3rd gear, but it did hurt traction and got many chuckles. Can someone help me sort out my times and the changes I made at the track??? This is my frist time. 1st ET 10.882 MPH 39.01 60 ft time 2.263 I ran with all my tools & **** in car regular street trim 2nd ET 10.475 MPH 49.15 60 ft time 2.283 Throw **** out of car, No other changes 3rd ET 11.061 MPH 39.86 60 ft 2.417 COIL WIRE came loose in 3rd gear 4th ET10.490 MPH 50.68 60 ft 2.348 Swap front tires (4.5) to rear (6.00) 5th ET10.647 MPH 46.87 60 ft 2.344 timing bumped up 5 degrees and I FORGOT the PARKING BRAKE ON! 6th ET 10.555 MPH 50.38 60ft 2.350 with brake off
Nelson - I'm not laughing at your tire switch deal. I used to do the same thing with my '50 Chevy at the drags. Can't recall how much - but it did improve my E.T. BTW - There should be a seperate "banger" cl*** for HA/GRs. That would be some fun.
Great pics - thanks for posting. How loud was the red roadster with no muffler? I'm thinking of straight zoomies for mine - might be a bit much...
Wildfire, I did not think it was that bad, but the pipe that you use makes all the differance in sound. Bush, the Burnett cutaway is trapped in my old dead harddrive, but I plan on hooking the drive up to my new computer, you are not the first to ask, I will post if I get the file back.
FORDY6 I was looking for you, the timing tag will look great on my dash. You better be there next year.
The throw out bearing is getting noisy in my A...and we had a wedding Saturday afternoon, I'll be looking forward to next year. I was wondering how the timing tags worked out...Steve
If this had not been the same day as the Greenfield swap, I would have been there. They probably wouldn't have let me run with my V8 though. Tell them to schedule next year's on a different weekend.
