what cars came with a 6 spline banjo rear end and which came with 10 spline? would the pinions be interchangeable? are the cases the same ?

10 spline was 32-34 6 spline 35-48; I believe. The ring gear AND pinion might be interchangeable, but only as a set. You should not put a pinion with a ring gear from another rear. They are machined to work together when new. I think the cases are the same.

i think 10 splines actually went thru 36, however, the 32-34 is different due to the smaller center section of the banjo. you can put 35 and up gears in a earlier center with some tricks, but the early gears only go in early centers

Late '32 thru '37 were 10 spline pinions. Early '32 was a model A style, fits nothing else.
    '38 thru '48 had 6 spline pinions.
'35 thru '48 R&P's as a set will interchange in the '35 up center sections.
If you find a complete rear (32-48) laying in the dirt somewhere, check the torque tube for a grease fitting about half way. 10 spline (tubular drive shaft) no fitting, 6 spline (solid shaft) had a bearing mid way & a grease fitting.

    An after thought.
'39-'41 Mercury's with a 3:54 gear ratio were fitted with a one piece pinion & drive shaft, no coupling. With out going to the 'book' I can't comment on the other ratios.

Just went through some of this on my '35 pickup. I have 10 spline originals, so a 10 spline driveshaft end, and wanted 3.54s instead of the 4.11s I had. Stuff all swaps centers (35-48), but the ring gear bearings are different, so you have to pay attention to that if you swap to later bells. The plus side is the later bearings are 1) larger rollers with a deeper cone, and 2) they're significantly cheaper. If you don't get it right though, you'll have issues with proper pre-load.
