Alright. I've got a banjo with a broken axle I need to replace. Other than the broken axle. The rear end is in good shape, with no issues. Can I just pull it apart and replace the axle? Or do I need to re-shim things? Just kinda wondering what I am getting into...
You might get lucky using the paper gaskets that are already in there. Count the paper gaskets on each bell and record the number, then put the same amount of new ones in. Reassemble abs check the preload on the bearings, then adjust as necessary by adding/ removing gaskets. Look up the procedure here or van pelts site.
The axle shaft will have no affect on the bearing clearances inside, so do as Dan says and you should be fine. Would be wise to replace the small seal inside the outer end of the housing when you replace the axle.
Oh man that inner axle seal sucks! I ruined a couple before I got two in. I have a tool around here somewhere for that. I suppose if I was doing it more often I’d get better at it.
I recommend having a look at the carrier while you in there. As the last two axles I broke took out the carrier
Don't just count the number of gaskets, they could be different thicknesses. Measure the overall thickness of the gasket pack and duplicate it. Charlie Stephens
@alchemy Here’s the tool, basically a long driver made from threaded pipe. The tape on the end had the seal driver taped to it, the one in the picture. I guess the seal driver fell off at some point when we moved.
I had a KR wilson one that worked good but borrowed it to a buddy. Unfortunately he passed away and don't know what happened to it. It's a pretty simple thing to machine
The little part from the Early Ford Store, does the sticking out part hold the seal as you are lowering it into the housing? A snug fit?
No, that's what made it such a booger. Had to kinda drop the seal in there, use the driver to get it square in the bore, then try to tap on the end with the hammer praying the seal doesn't go in sideways, which it usually does. I'm sure old timers had a better way but this is what I came up with.
