i was wondering if their is a banjo identification chart for 40's rear ends, im trying to figure out exactly what rear i have in my model A , the rear is a wider rear with leaf spring pads ontop of the axle tubes these are factory, im trying to get info on the ratio and what it was used in. width of the rear is 55 inchs with juice brakes and like i said it has leaf spring pads on top of the axle tube with an open drive line, no torq tube and its all stock.. i have searched all day and have come up empty on this rear, im thinking a truck, but which one

I looked at this but it doesnt show my rear end on it

  4. Post a picture of it. The spring perch area and wishbone area.

If it has pads, open yoke and is a Ford banjo I would say truck ('46 or so). I used the same parts in my A.

Mine has 4.11 gears, 11 tooth spiders, 16 tooth axles.

Since the rear has factory spring pads what you have is the open drive banjo rear used under Ford trucks in 1947 and 1948. The gear ratio is stamped under the center housing. Looking under the rear you will see a raised rib in the front of the housing on the flat surface of that rib Ford stamped the ratio. Most trucks would have a 411 ratio but the 378 ratio was also used.

It definitely has some gears in it ...this is my problem. .here goes.
When installed the rear I used some rear wish bones I had which worked fine..but when it came to mounting a rear spring ..I did t have one so what I did was cut the spring perches off a model A axle and bolted them to my backing plates on this 40's rear making it a spring over axle..I stretched the model A spring the length of the axle till it met the shackles causing what im thinking is the model a spring to be stretched to far and only having a 1/4 inch of travel, which isn't enough rides terrible.the shackle angle is correct bit the ride is horrible im trying to figure out either weld new spring shackle mounts to the rear or buy a custom spring so I can have a comfertable ride .I dont drive the car much due to this. ..any help i know the stock A spring is stretched like 48 or 49 inchs stock .mine is stretched like 51-52 inchs (spring was taken apart to install) thats how I got it to strech that far.

  7. You have a 3rd option, to make the rear smaller but it requires finding additional parts. I'm going to be running a '46 center, '35 bells and '39 axles making it about 1/2" wider then an A rear. The cheapest way would be to weld on perches. A over stretched spring will ride horrible.
