Hi all I’ve searched and read a few of the posts on this topic. I’m new to the banjos and am unclear on which parts to use to convert my ‘30 A rear to an open drive. I found a gentleman selling these ‘46 pickup parts...what would I have to do to use them to convert? I’m doing a ‘29 Sportster with a ‘46 DeSoto 6 and trans.... TIA Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The pick up parts shown will not fit a Model A rear end.The bolt circle is different and the driveshaft is completely different. You don’t have anything you can use. You would need to machine the driveshaft for splines and modify the torque tube for a seal I have never seen it done.
The conversion I used is the one from Speedway Motors. A Model A banjo is different from a V8 banjo in that the pinion is installed on the driveshaft of the Model A. A V8 banjo has a separate pinion shaft. A Model A banjo conversion requires the rearend to be dis***embled to convert, since you have to pull the driveshaft out of the banjo center casting. Then the pinion gear is installed along with the pinion bearings on a short "dummy" input shaft that is then ***embled into the banjo housing. On that "dummy" pinion shaft, the open drive yoke is then installed. Maybe the photos of their listing in this link will help clarify what I tried to describe. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Spee...en-Drive-Driveshaft-Conversion-Kit,40133.html BTW....I just sent a PM about the parts we've been discussing.
