get the LPS 3, it's a parrafin based anti rust,it doesn't penetrate but sticks to the surface to prevent rust, you can clean it off with solvent.small airplane owners love it. we coat bare metal parts with it at work all the time. kind pf gooey but it gets the job done.

    Use Picklex 20.

I've got parts (inside of course) that are bare metal and have Picklex on them for several years and look as good as they did when they were first treated.

Parts can't be exposed to direct moisture.

'Google' Picklex 20 for more info....there are a few people who sell it.

I like Gibbs for certain things, but still have the aversion to putting anything that seems to be 'oil like' on any metal I plan to paint over.

    Just me.

Picklex will NOT get the paint out of the pits.

I would try aircraft strength paint stripper and elbow grease.

Picklex would be a great treatment for the pits after the paint is removed.

I have no financial interest in Picklex, it has worked well for me.

Search the internet, there are several places to get more info and buy the stuff.

  4. i bought some stuff for removing rust at auto zone for Lil Beast...had a few spots of pitted rust on it..also had paint and a very hard sealer of some kind on it...used brass small 2" wire wheel on drill...removes all of the rust, pitted areas and also loosens the paint deep in the pitts..directions say to apply and let stand then rinse..figure not a good idea in michigan in the dead of winter..rinsing with water..so after i apply it i have either let it dry and wire wheel later or for the really bad spots, i wire wheeled it while the stuff was still wet..gotta watch the splater this way, but cleans it all like new steel..and i tried some rattle can paint over it and it has no bad effects to it...also have been using steel wire wheel 4" to remove all the paint..both layers...just cant bring myself to sand my 71 year old steel body any thinner ..metal looks like new stuff..hard to beleive after 71 years.......

you can see in the pic where i have wheeled it below the door handle, but not the rest of the door, except for the upper area where it is real shiney...makes even the deep pits look like new steel....reclick pic for extra large closeup

Just paint it with some Plastikote Engine Enamel, like the low-gloss black.
The stuff is strong and cheap, like $5.
Obviously you'll need to sand the paint off areas that will have brackets welded etc.
But it will limit the rust and looks clean.

When the time comes for serious paint,
it is easy enough to sand it off,
easier than degreasing it - and way easier than sanding rust off.

    Where in SD are you?
I have a shop near old town off Rosecrans.

I'm in Imperial Beach, but work in a barbershop in downtown (leftys barbershop) I'll try to stop by one of these days.

picklex 20 sounds like the stuff I'm looking for, I definitely plan on painting the rails one of these days, What do you guys think when it comes down to painting, should I have the rails powder coated then painted so I can have a strong base for the paint or do you guys suggest just painting them?

    Thanks for all the replies!

If you powdercoat it, just get it done in the color you want...probably stronger than any paint any of us would use. Honestly the only proper way in my eyes to get ALL the rust off is to blast it, but they do that when they powder coat it, but really the surface rust isnt goin to hurt a thing.
